Chepstow Castle

Story

Chepstow Castle at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Located above cliffs on the River Wye, construction began in 1067 under the instruction of the Norman Lord William fitzOsbern. Originally known as Striguil, it was the southernmost of a chain of castles built in the Welsh Marches, and with its attached lordship took the name of the adjoining market town in about the 14th century. In the 12th century the castle was used in the conquest of Gwent, the first independent Welsh kingdom to be conquered by the Normans. It was subsequently held by two of the most powerful Anglo-Norman magnates of medieval England, William Marshal and Richard de Clare. However, by the 16th century its military importance had waned and parts of its structure were converted into domestic ranges. Although re-garrisoned during and after the English Civil War, by the 1700s it had fallen into decay. With the later growth of tourism, the castle became a popular visitor destination. The ruins were Grade I listed on 6 December 1950.

A most worthy castle to visit. From its early norman foundations to the extensions under the Marshall family, William Marshall being England's greatest knight. Most of it is still accessible under social distancing. Quite a long castle built upon the cliff edge, can see the bedrock at points.
Visited today. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but we took some great photos of the exterior. It's a big and very well preserved castle. There is a car park just few meters away and a nice path to walk around most of its perimeter.
Pretty small castle in a very good condition. unfortunately could not get into as I was late. Though, had a very nice walk around. There is a parking space nearby, and the village around itself is also lovely. Very accessible for a quick drive by if you are visiting Bristol by car.
Well worth a visit. I would recommend buying tickets beforehand as the inside of the Castle is vast and more interesting than the walk outside of the walls. It takes about an hour to see everything inside. There is a car park and free toilets on site. There are also plenty of places to eat within a short walk.
Very nice views from the castle. It's also really nice to just walk around the castle grounds at your own leisure.
It's good to pre-book your tickets online. There is a car parking just in front of the castle. It's £1.50 for up to two hours.
