An absolute classic. The single most traditional British pie you’ll ever have and the most welcoming experience. Just extremely cosy, familiar, and a little time capsule. At the same time makes you forget you’re in the heart of modern London and on the other it’s inherently the most low-profile, comforting, working-class London bistro you could imagine. But most importantly. The pies are great. Ridiculously great. So simple, they couldn’t be any better. Super warm and casual staff makes everything even tastier! Could see myself moving to the neighbourhood just to eat there every two days. Just amazing.
A local told us that if we haven't tried pie and mash, we haven't been to London. That's why this little restaurant was the first stop on our culinary tour. Pie and mash is a combination of meat pie, mashed potatoes and parsley sauce. Portions at the Castle's are generous, but, coming from a country that uses a lot of spices, the taste felt a little bland. That's really a personal preference, as the queue at this place didn't stop for the full hour we spent there! When it comes to desserts though, I was blown away. The treacle pudding with custard was steaming hot and made me feel warm and fuzzy inside on a windy day. And it's so sweet! I couldn't finish it and I eat a lot of sweet stuff!. The place is small and cozy, five tables inside, two outside. Cash only There's a step at the entrance, but plenty of room for a wheelchair or stroller, inside and outside.
First time I tried pie n mash. I didn’t like it. Friendly stuff but the whole place could be a little bit more clean and tidy. They are not accepting payment by card! Be sure to carry cash! There’s no ATM close to the area! Really mixed feelings..
Great, filling comfort food. Shame they didn’t have eels when we went but just means we have to go again soon. Ambiance is great and friendly, feels very homey.
Wednesday 15/02/2023, After waiting 3 x years from Covid lockdown I finally went to Camden for a Pie & Mash lunch, delicious as always, I accidentally dropped a £20 note when taking out my phone to take this picture, only noticed an hour later, returned and asked if they had found it, Yes they said with a big smile and gave it back, my lucky day & would like to thank them for their honesty.
Fantastic pie and mash shop. First time I ate pie and mash and stewed eels and I must say I enjoyed it. My partner has been here before so he knew already it's going to be a good choice. Friendly staff and fast service.
Good quality pie and mash to help set you up for the afternoon, really tasty.
The best, incredibly authentic home made Pie and Mash you’ll find in London. Traditional, affordable and served by exceedingly British and kind people. A must for everyone, who’s tired of tourist traps and getting overcharged for „instagramable“ food.
Managed to find this place open after the fifth or sixth time of passing. No acknowledgement by staff so sat down and waited and waited finally guy behind the counter was free and took order waitress too busy chatting with customers. Food was ok but not as good as in the past in my opinion pies a bit nondescript but bread and butter pudding and custard pretty good. The coffee I had was reasonable. All in all not unpleasant but have had much better.
Went there with great expectations after reading all the reviews. Very disappointing the pies and mash not really tasty. Then the apple crumble had hair in it!! The staff were friendly but the food taste were not as expected. The food was put into the garbage.
