Castle Hotel

Story

Castle Hotel stands at the top of Halton Hill in Halton, Runcorn, Cheshire, England. Its side walls are continuous with the curtain walls of the ruins of Halton Castle. It is now a public house and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building..HistoryThe building was originally a courthouse. The court at Halton had been held in the gatehouse of the castle. However, by 1737 its structure had deteriorated so badly that it was decided to build a new courthouse on the site of the gatehouse, using some of the stones from the previous building. The courtroom was on the first floor of the building and prisoners were held in cells in the basement.ArchitectureThe courthouse is constructed in red sandstone and it has a slate hipped roof. It has two storeys and seven bays; the lateral two bays project forward on each side. An outside staircase leads up to the first-floor door to the courtroom. Over its door are the Royal court of arms. Inside the courtroom is a marble tablet containing an inscription commemorating the completion of its building.

Thought we would try a quick evening meal on a Thursday as it is local to us. We were so glad we did. A warm welcome from the bar with recommendations for food. Steak and Ale pie and fish and chips all home cooked was gorgeous . We will be going back for Lamb Sunday Lunch that's for sure. Thanks so much x
Great place now it’s been refurbished. Staff fab. My only comment would be the Home Made Chips. I expected firm crisp chips. What I got were Luke warm soggy limp chips. Hopefully just a one off. If not, this needs looking at.
Really nice pub great food and service super friendly helpful staff situated in idyllic location with great views and a relaxing atmosphere would highly recommend will definitely be coming again
What an amazing historical pub and location, the staff were super friendly too. Definitely on my to revisit list.
My first time here. I've wanted to go for a few years.nHowever it was not a very nice experience.nQuite dirty and dusty, the carpet needed a good vacuuming. And cobwebs in the windows.nNo nice atmosphere at all. No music on.nThe ladies toilets had no toilet roll and the floors and sinks had not been cleaned.nHowever, the real fire was lovely.nIt could be a lovely pub if more care and attention was made to it.
