An astonishing project, craftsmen are building a medieval castle from scratch using traditional methods and tools. There is ample parking. The toilet facilities, like all on offer are well maintained and clean. Visitors can wander as they please through the complex, watching craftspeople at work. The castle is only part of the attraction, nearby in the woods are medieval workshops and buildings. We did not try the restaurants, apparently the food is good.
This place is a living museum and it is great. The craftsmen here are reconstructing a medieval castle using the same tools, materials, and methods they used in the middle ages during the reign of Philippe II. They have been working on it for years and years, and the castle will be completed in a few years 2025 was an estimate given by a mason working there Around the castle you will find all sorts of workshops where they are crafting the tools and materials needed to create the castle. You will find things like a smith, a carpenter, a quarry, a mortar maker, a stone worker, a dye and paint maker, a watermill, and many more things. The people working there are all dressed in medieval clothes, and they are happy to explain the things they're working on and teach you the techniques. It is super interesting, but you will have a hard time talking to the craftsmen if you do not speak French. There are signs all over the place in both French and English, but the staff only speak French. You will also find more modern facilities near the entrance, such as a restaurant and a souvenir shop, and they also have a decent number of bathrooms. The place is a great place to bring kids, and you can easily spend a full day there, but keep in mind though that the ground is very uneven and not great for strollers, prams, or wheel chairs. The restaurant is very expensive, and the servings are tiny, so I really recommend that you bring your own food. There are plenty of picnic areas at the place and you are welcome to bring your own food and drink if you prefer to do that.
This amazing place is being built since 1997 with the same techniques of the XIII century. No new machinery at all! A great place for discovering skills almost lost with the industrial revolution. You can find blacksmiths, stone carvers, wood turning all by hand, wood carving, pottery for tiles, bowls, and much more, a watermill for making flour, horses and much more! A great place for the kids and adults to discover the medieval times and how they were making objects and a castle all by hand! Great for a picnic, but if you find yourself willing to treat yourself there is also a restaurant. Try the veg burger is very good! And I love meat! A lot!
One of a kind place on the earth. To see the castle being built by the middle age technique, is an experience by itself. Around the castle, there's plenty of small craft houses, where you can see how are made ropes, crafted rocks for the castle and many more.. Additionally you can sign yourself for a small workshop. You can easily spent a day in the middle age, by visiting the Guedelon!
Beautiful and educational. Staff is well informed, friendly and help in telling the story surrounding the castle. Recommended for all ages. If you like "Het Archeon" in the Netherlands then this will suit you as well. One of the must visit castles.
Great place to experience how life was in the middle ages building a castle. You can watch someone making a medieval door latch/roof shingles/rope/wood oven and ask them questions about how they are making it In French of course. The place is very well organised with ample restuarants and toilets and parking.
Fantastic project - spent a day there and would happily have spent much longer - fascinating seeing everything that is going into making the castle real.
What an interesting place to visit. I just love the idea behind this place. The castle is about 90% complete I would guess. And the surrounding workshops where the volunteers make and color the linens, shape the stone, and work with the wood Are really fascinating. I’m glad we went. My son loved the stone cutting workshops. You have to book it in advance. Restaurants: The restaurant information on the website wasn’t completely clear. So there are two restaurants, casual outdoor seating. The restaurants are open for lunch until three or 4 PM, depending on demand. After that there are snacks such as desserts fruit cups and beverages. Picnic lunches are also welcome.
Great place to explore. Stayed all day and loved every minute. Lots to see and great guides to explain all the different trades exhibited. Good lunch options and very well run. Unique experience. Thoroughly recommend if you love history.
for everybody who is interested in knights, castles, constructions a great place! but the food sold was poor, so better eat before the visit. hardly any explanations in other languages than French. great experience, been there 4 times already.
