We had a great walk in the estate grounds with the two abandoned house's. Good paths through the woodlands with water features

This review is for Carmichael Farm Shop. Mail order is available and they do farmers markets. Carmichael Estate specialises in venison, but also farm sheep and cattle. Venison and lamb are slaughtered on the farm, minimising stress. The cattle, which are obviously larger, have to travel to the local abattoir for dispatch. Butchery is on site from whole carcasses. My main reason to go is to buy deep tasting lamb shoulder on the bone (remarkably hard to get not boned and rolled in Scotland). It is too cheap to be honest, but that is estate policy, so take advantage I say. Beautiful meat. The produce aside, the real star of the shop is the lady who serves there. She is actually veggie, but super friendly and helpful. We always enjoy a good natter with her. Also look out for rarities such as fresh venison liver (better than calf any day), or pick up some red deer antlers: table decoration and Sunday lunch in one!

We stayed in the Pond Cottage which is a lovely small cottage where you get to be in your own peace. You can't even see any neighbours and it's by a lovely small dog friendly pond. There is an excellent hike to the top of Tinto Hill you can do starting from the cottage. Carmichael tea room and shop are really good with very friendly service. We booked some food from the farm shop beforehand and it was all set up ready for our arrival.

This was our second visit, and we stayed in a different cottage this time. We had the Coachmans cottage, and wow, what a lovely cottage it is. Plenty of room for the kids to run and play, with interesting walks on both sides of the estate. I would recommend if your planning a trip to Scotland to call in at the visitors centre for more information. And a return trip to stay here. Thanks have to be given to the staff who were very welcoming. And yes, we did get to see some very elusive deer!

This was the worst experience ever, the total cost for 2 nights was £185 for a one bedroom cottage which looked like a coal shed. It smelt of damp, the furniture was awful i have taken better furniture to the dump, the sofa was stained and so uncomfortable, the carpets looked like they needed a good clean The kitchen was disgusting i was unable to cook, the plates in the cupboard had remnants of food on them, the pots and pans were all greasy and the oven trays did not look at all good. The ceiling had stains all over, wallpaper was hanging off the toilet was worse than on any campsite, facing the road with no privacy only a net curtain. Each time we stepped out the front door there was dog feaces which we cleared up on the first occasion but when we repeatedly found it decided to leave it as obviously someone was too lazy to clear up after their dog and thought it okay to leave it outside someone elses cottage for them to walk in, totally disgusting and unnecessary.6 The heating was inadequate, and the cottage was so draughty it certainly was not a cosy retreat. Parking was a nightmare the only space available was a muddy patch, which was the frontage and just big enough to take the car, we then had to negotiate getting out of the car up against a small bank then get back down the bank to the front door which was more like my garden shed door. We would never consider staying on this estate ever again, we were booked for two days, stayed one day and left 6am could not get out quick enough. I did leave a note with my review, contact name and telephone number but to date have received no response so they obviously have no interest in peoples experiences or feedback.
