Just collected after a visit to this place for the first time for lunch today, as I live locally. Restaurant was full and for takeaway there was a queue. When I did get food and take home, it was hands down THE MOST AWFUL CHIPS I have ever tasted from a fish and chip shop. Brittle, pale, chewy, old stale taste and lifeless. A real disappointment and practically ruined the experience for me, my partner and her friend. A shame because the fish, scampi, fish cakes were decent. Reading the comments here, I see a previous reviewer has commented about exactly the same, and phoned them up to complain, whereby they were told it must be a bad variety of potato. It didn't fool them as they had kitchen restaurant experience. I have to agree with them that it seemed the chips had been cooked some time before, possibly even the night before. But I would add that this time, it could've been that they were undercooked due to them being busy. Order at your peril, but don't say I didn't warn you. I was fooled by the gentrified look of the place from the outside, which of course, is no guarantee of the experience you'll get from within.
Went here for the first time to sit down and eat for Father’s Day. The chips were brittle, pale, chewy, old stale taste and lifeless as another reviewer said and I’m just repeating there words because they were exactly like that. None of us ate them see pictures. The amount of calamari rings we got for starters was the same amount for a main we got but once you add the chips and a bit of lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes it looks big. Lukewarm beer as well. They had a few items not available when placing an order so they could of at least take them of the menu temporarily. I am not a food critic but I have friends and family that work in this business so I know when I taste good fish and chips. It was literally tasteless.
An hour ago I popped into Cannons to buy a portion of Chips as I was feeling hungry after a walk around Broomfield Park. The price may be slightly more than you'd pay for elsewhere, but it's absolutely worth it given how the chips tasted so nice and the portion size was really good. I would definitely come here again, and hopefully will try the lunchtime offer!
Good fish!! The fish is very crispy and tasty, though it's a bit tough as you can see from the picture that the piece of fish is a thick one. The chips taste bland and needed to add your own salt. I ordered a cappuccino and it's again, bland.
I bought a large cod, calamari rings and chips this evening. Not only were the staff polite and knowledgeable about their menu, the food came quickly too. When I got it home and ate it with my wife and daughter, we felt that the calamaries were as good as we have had on the Mediterranean and the fish was as good as we have had in the south coast of England. Amazing in every way. Thank you.

Beautiful place, great staff and food was 100% the best. Enjoyed scampi, chips and mushy peas, as well as a well needed cup of tea. Location is nice, peaceful but still a busy street Outside dinning available Will definitely revisit soon
It was strangely posher than i thought when I walked in. All table cloths and wine glasses... very nice. It's not all fish and chips on the menu as there were sone meat dishes, too. I love haddock which was available. One thing, cod was on offer as well but no plaice which surprised me.Food: 4/5
We have pop in today around 4pm for dine in in the restaurant , but we have been told by not much nice woman that they are closed till 5pm, unfortunately on restaurant’s website opening times are 12.30pm till 11.30pm. It’s a shame we couldn’t have a nice afternoon with seafood specials. At least we could buy something from take away service from Cannon Fish Takeway with lovely young man who was serving us. I advise updating the information on opening times on the website as well as focusing on better, nicer and more professional customer service.
Really good whitebait, and great to sit and have the food fresh. Expensive for fish and chips but was first rate, and the cost of fish has gone up so not unexpected. Cod bites are also a great option
