What a fantastic find, free parking in stunning grounds, free entrance to castle. And all dog friendly. Had a great time climbing up the towers and learning more about this fantastic castle remains. Coffee shop on site and picnic tables within the castle. Highly recommend
Fab treat. Great parking, country park nearby with playground for small children. The castle is free and we were welcomed by a volunteer who helpfully explained where the toilets, shop and access rooms were. The shop had hot drinks, ice creams and snacks. It was very reasonably priced and had games and books relevant to the site. I bought a castle in a bag toy for my 2 year old who loved it, a guide and postcard. Lots of space inside the castle to eat. A few rooms are open inside the keep including the roof. The banqueting room in the main gatehouse is also open too. We walked around the outside of the castle and had a picnic inside. We stayed for 3 hours in total. A great location.
Right, to start things off, Caldicot Castle is literally FREE to enter and free parking nnSo you’re on to a winner already. Now, just because something is free, doesn’t mean it’s worth it. Someone could be offering free rectal inspections but I wouldn’t be down for it. Unless it’s my wife, but that’s another story.nnBUT… we’ve done a LOT of castles in our time and this is well worth it. Take Warwick Castle for example, which is an absolute rip off, there’s not really much difference. They both have castles, towers, cafes and grounds. Sure, Warwick Castle is bigger, but they wanna charge you for everything that they have that’s extra ‍nnWe managed to spend 2 hours here, longer if you count the park/play area out the front, and had a pretty good time. Sure, the stairs are almost lethal with three young kids, but where’s the fun if there’s no threat of an A&E visit nnYou have picnic benches if you bring food, a chess board if you wanna play that, plenty of space if you just want to walk, and even a piano that you’re probably not supposed to touch.nnMy only knock is that a single espresso is £2 and a double is £3.30. Mad price. I’ll pay £2.30 for a double and even that’s pushing it. I had an Americano instead
Ideal place to take young children as it's zero cost and space to move around. Interesting to explore the castle, although the tearoom could improve with serving more than just hot drinks, it's missing opportunity to serve food, although nearby pub satisfies that demand.
Lovely castle, great place for a day out with the children. Car park near castle, small playground, cafe, picnic area, and grass area. We all had a great time exploring the castle and ruins. Friendly staff and nicely kept grounds. Prices in the cafe are cheaper than expected, especially for beverages. Fabulous views from the tower.
