Burns Cottage

About

The birthplace of Robert Burns, housing the world's most important Burns collection of manuscripts, art and artefacts.

Story

Set in 10 acres of Burns' beloved Alloway countryside, the museum provides a unique encounter with Scotland's favourite son. Immersive sound and light installations, films and interactive media and contemporary art commissions help to interpret and enhance the historic landscape and collection, which includes original manuiscripts of Burns' most famous works, such as Auld Lang Syne and Tam o' Shanter.

Loved it. Highly recommended to anyone. Very informative inside & loads of history. An absolute must.
Marvellous and magnificent Cottage of the literacy legend Robert Burns in the heart of the village where he made his name of Alloway. In addition to the Cottage you can wander around the gardens where you can see some interesting flower borders and also can also wander around the smallholding where you can see some interesting natural garden sculptures and a pond. Inside the Cottage you can wander around some of the rooms where you can get a real flavour of how Burns lived and his living conditions. There is also some audio playing in the background inside the Cottage where you can gain a further of how Burns lived, which is very enlightening and interesting. At the entrance to the cottage there is an interesting informative guide to all the rooms inside the Cottage and what is contained in them. You can also admire the architecture of the buildingnexternally, which is pretty spectacular and awesome and the Cottage itself is in outstanding condition considering its age. Overall this is a fantastic and phenomenal place to visit, which makes for a thoroughly enjoyable, enlightening and enthralling day out to see how a literacy legend lived first hand. Well worth a visit whilst in Ayrshire.
Its a small cottage so the tour is not long but there are other things to see and visit in the area. There is also a small garden walk way on the way up to the cottage.
The cottage is included in the museum ticket and a mere 5-7 minute leisurely walk each way.nnThe grounds are nice but the house itself is slightly disappointing as only four rooms and easily seen in literally 2 minutes as no real signs. For the rooms - one is empty, one about farm life, and two simplistic rooms arranged in house style of his time.nnFacilities include its own car park and toilets.
Excellent place for a walk and to visit the nearby museum. Very informative and staff super friendly.
