About

Burghley House - England's Greatest Elizabethan House

Story

Built and mostly designed by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1555 and 1587, the main part of the House has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. There are more than 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. The lead roof extends to three quarters of an acre, restoration and rebuilding of which began in 1983 and took nearly ten years to complete. Visitor facilities include the Orangery Restaurant, Gift Shop, Gardens of Surprise and beautiful walks around the historic parkland laid out by Capability Brown and still occupied by a herd of fallow deer.

History can come alive in a single trip whether it is to enjoy a guided tour, take a dog for a walk in the park, take the children to paddle, see the Teddy Bear’s picnic in the Gardens of Surprise or take time over lunch in the Orangery

Had a fantastic day here. Lots to see and do for all the family. The sun shone for us which helped. So lovely to see the children enjoying playing in the garden of surprises. Grand parents enjoying their days wandering around the house and the fantastic grounds and all age groups just having a lovely time. It didn't break the bank either. Good value for money. Go visit and enjoy.

A magnificent house form the exterior in stunning grounds, and that's all you need to see. The interior of the house is only a relatively small area and similar rooms. The new garden areas, such as the garden of surprises, are like something they use at theme parks to keep you entertained in queues. Tickets prices are very pricey, even with them being annual passes, and the food in the cafe and orangery is very poor value for money. Overall, I would suggest using the money you would spend on tickets to buy a nice blanket and hamper, get a lunch meal deal* from a supermarket, and have a lovely picnic at a great free location! * I deliberately say this as the kids lunch 'deal' in the cafe is a small cheese, ham or tuna soft white roll, a small juice carton, and a piece of fruit or bag of crisps for £5.95!!

Beautiful house and grounds. Very knowledgeable people giving information Lots to see and do. An audio is available for an extra charge which is well worth it. A yearly pass is available which is good as there is so much to see it is worth a return visit. A very relaxed lunch added to the enjoyment of the day

Wonderful place to visit on a warm day. The garden of surprises is yeriffic whether you are a child or just young at heart. I have eaten there on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed it and found the staff to be helpful. The food may seem a little pricey to some people but as I have said above is nice.

Burghley House dates from 1518 and is a wonderful historic building. Originally built by Queen Elizabeth I’s chancellor but developed over the centuries, the house itself has beautiful rooms. It’s not English Heritage or National Trust so you have to pay to enter. However, the parkland is free to walk in and is beautiful. There’s also a sculpture garden and a “Garden of Surprises” which are also paid entry but worth visiting. Food at The Orangery is good. The photo is the house seen from the jumps at the start of the Burghley Horse Trials (first weekend of September each year).
