I moved to Thatcham about 8 months ago from Windsor. I have to say that Burdwood Surgery is excellent. The staff is professional yet compassionate. It is always possible to get an appointment. It is very convenient that blood tests can be done right on the premises and most importantly, the doctors and health workers never forget to follow up when a health issue is ongoing. I highly recommend Burdwood.
I had an appointment and arrived on time and booked in with the receptionist, however, due to a faulty appointment system apparently, I waited an hour to be seen. I was told that after i was booked in on the system, the system changed my status to “not arrived” and so the nurse was not aware that i was waiting. If i hadn't asked how much longer i would have to wait, i would still be sitting waiting hours later. This is not good enough especially as both the receptionist and the nurse were aware of the faulty system. Did nobody notice me sitting waiting??
I know that GP's are getting a lot of negative press at the moment and honestly, I am not the biggest fan of the NHS myself, having had a lot of negative experiences within the system. However, I have been a patient at the Burdwood surgery for nearly 10 years and it is an excellent practice. Early on in the pandemic, I was seen in person by Dr Bahia when I was having severe kidney pain and more recently, my partner has been seen in person on several occasions for ongoing back pain he is even having a blood test at the surgery this Sunday!. We have had absolutely no issues in obtaining a face-to-face appointment when it has been necessary. Furthermore, Dr Osborne, my own GP, has ensured that there has been no delay whatsoever in issuing my prescriptions in what I'm sure is a very demanding time. The receptionists are always kind and helpful too and I do not feel like I'm going to be subject to the Spanish Inquisition whenever I request help! And I would like to add that Kerry, who is one of the medical secretaries, is an absolute gem and is so unbelievably helpful!! Thank you all for your help, hard work and commitment to your patients. I know that all of you must feel a bit dejected and unappreciated at times, but my partner and I certainly appreciate your service.
The past year stopped my inhalers 3 times and discarded what the hospital has prescribed me
This has been my GP Surgery for my whole life I'm 25. Over the years I've not really had any issues with any of the GP's. However the biggest issue I have had throughout the experience and more so over the last 6-12 months is that it's next to impossible to get an appointment. A normal booked appointment is often a minimum 2 week wait, and while there are slots at 8:30 and 11:30 to call and book for same day appointment, it's very, very difficult to get one. My partner has also found the same, calling at 8:30 or 11:30 results more often than not in a "line busy" - so you are left to re-dial many times in one case we had to redial over 100 times before we got through, was on hold for nearly 5 minutes, only to be told there was no appointments left. I do appreciate that the local area has grown a lot over the last few years with new developments and what not, but the Surgery has not been able to keep up with demands - Maybe a different way of booking appointments can be made, for example web booking. I would like to re-iterate that the staff and GP's themselves are by and large excellent and once you actually get through and see a GP it is a pleasant experience, but the booking experience is very frustrating, and I do appreciate that this is not specific to this surgery but hundreds of doctors surgeries across the country.
Absolutely lousy. Still not doing proper face to face appointments. If this is the future of the NHS it deserves to be privatised.
I am so pleased to be part of this wonderful surgery. Accessible, attentive and caring staff at all levels and no problem is too small!
Had no issues with availability and always a friendly, professional service from all staff. Will be sorry to leave this practice after two years, but a move to Andover beckons!
