I will admit that when I first visited this restaurant I had no idea what bunny chow was and so was open to being pleasantly surprised. On the whole? I really do like this restaurant but unfortunately it's inconsistency is what lets it down. I love the chicken bunny but the pulled pork one is absolutely flavourless. The meatballs and the ribs are great but the risotto in my opinion is a bit pants too. The owners are really lovely people and it's clear they're really passionate about what they do but they just need to step these few dishes up and it'll be great. It's really reasonably priced and all of the drinks there are amazing.
Nice cozy little place on Wardour St in central London and close to the Theatre. We tried three pulled chicken and the beef meatballs bunnies. This comprised of a vertical shaped cylinder of bread hollowed out with the filling topped off with your chosen slaw. The chicken dish was treaty but had a lot of chili and was slightly hot for my taste. The meatballs dish is highly recommended, very tasty, well seasoned and enjoyable. All in for £6 each and no service charge
Quick service, really lovely food and great atmosphere inside. I tried the mutton curry in a brioche loaf and it was delicious. Not too spicy and the meat was so tasty. Also, lunch for £5?! Yes please!
Bunnychow is a South African street food restaurant in Soho that offers interesting flavours, packed in tasty buns. If you are tired of burgers, burritos and other current food trends, Bunnychow might be the place you will enjoy. Located on Wardour Street in busy Soho, Bunnychow is a great addition to the London food scene, I think. The little restaurant offers South African street food - I have no idea how authentic it is, but I like it! The range of dishes is somewhat limited to different flavours of the same thing: a bun filled with something. As I had never been there before and had no idea about the food, it took me a while to put together my order. While I was standing and wondering, the very supportive staff helped me by guiding me through the menu and also offering me tasters. I could not decide between the Chakalaka chicken filling and the pulled pork filling. After eating a few bites of the two fillings, I was not much wiser, because I liked both. At the end, I went for the chicken option. To go with my food, I chose the Madiba's juice, and exciting mix of grapefruit, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. When my dish was ready, my name was called out and I could collect my order from the counter. It came on a nice and practical plate and basically was really a bun used as a bowl and filled with a juicy filling in combination with a fruity and crispy topping. It tasted great, and being a fan of bread, I liked the idea of the food. After finishing off my bun bowl, I was very satisfied with my visit to Bunnychow and will definitely go again. It probably also makes a great snack for takeaway.
Great concept and basically great food. The problem however is, that the quality is quite unstable. At my today's visit, the bread was soaked, the bottles of the extra sauces were sticky and disgusting and the meatballs were also not that great. So, if you are lucky you will get great food. But if not, you will leave disappointed...
I had a pork bunny with rice and chilli popcorn. The service and price were very good, the pork tasty and the bun a little chewy I guess it must be but still good, especially for the price. The rice was my favourite - some of the best rice I have ever tried, maybe cooked with a good amount of butter, however full of strong but balanced flavour and a nice portion for just £1. I would definitely get the rice again.
Never tried south african before, so was intrigued by the menu here. Went for the bread-less mutton curry which added a new twist to curry and rice, quite a good size for £5 too. Would go again to try the loaves and other fillings.
The bunny chow mutton was tasty and quite filling. Pork ribs were dry and pretty horrible with an odd mayonnaise sauce. The madiba fruit juice was also pretty foul. Overall probably wouldn't go back, it seems more for homesick South Africans than a really nice meal.
Bunnychow Soho was not good, they only have one vegetarian option, which is fine if it's a decent meal instead of the anemic dusty thing I received. It comprised a table spoon of vegetables, seriously I found one pea and one tiny piece of sweet potato, served with a tiny scoop of quinoa and a sprinkle of salad in a weightless, dry the top part was stale bread bun. Not worth the money. All sold in a beautiful but awkward box that makes eating it difficult and messy. Honestly people don't bother left me annoyed and still hungry.
Was quite disappointed with Bunnychow. Photos of the food look amazing, however the bread was dry and the chicken was too hot to eat, which is a pity as I love spicy food. The food was served up from pre-made canteen style serving dishes imagine subway. Wouldn't recommend and I won't be going back.
