I had an inguinal hernia repair at the Lindo Wing in late March. From the time I was admitted at midday until my discharge at 6 p.m. I found every member of staff to be thoroughly professional and extremely kind and caring. The surgeon, Mr K Moorthy explained the procedure and answered my questions patiently. Similarly, the anaesthetist spent time explaining his role. Post operative pain was minor and I was able to walk my dogs for 2 miles the following morning and a similar distance in the afternoon. Altogether, I am extremely satisfied with the service I received.
I had a very large abdominal hernia which was causing me considerable distress. It was both unsightly and was causing significant pain and vomiting on an increasingly regular basis. Despite a number of enquiries and private consultations, I could not find anyone in Scotland who was willing to operate on it either privately or within the NHS. From my first contact with Mr Moorthy I was treated with kindness, compassion and given hope that I could be helped and that life could return to normal. I returned for repair of my hernia which included abdominal reconstruction in February 2022. At all times I was treated with great care and professionalism by all members of the team Mr Moorthy and all of the surgical and anaesthetic team, all nursing staff and physiotherapy. Following my operation Mr Moorthy visited me every day during my time on the ward and has remained available for contact following my discharge from the Lindo Wing. This included contacting my GP on one occasion and, providing invaluable advice to me. I have had to take things slowly this was made clear to me from the start but three months down the line I have a flat abdomen and no nausea or vomiting. Life is gradually beginning to return to normal although some restrictions are still in place eg no sit ups or crunches for another three months. I am able to do most things aerobic-exercise wise. I have only positive things to say about all aspects of my care. Finally, the food was fabulous and served with such flair by the lovely catering staff! Definitely a highlight during my 4 day stay. I would have no absolutely no hesitation in recommending the British Hernia Centre.
After 4 recurrent hernias inguinal one being strangulated, I had to have a resolution. I would say my hernia would be complicated with lots of scar tissue. I contacted BHC who from the first point of contact to the last were professional and accommodating. My allocated consultant was prepared to see me the evening before my op date to save me 2 trips from the northeast. He spent time assessing me and we reached a decision. Op was completed next morning and seriously I could have taken the train home that afternoon. As the post op pain has been so minor my main difficulty is remembering to take it easy. Back to work literally in 5 days. I do not normally do reviews, but credit where credit is due to the whole team. Highly recommended.
I am self-insured for medical treatment. Costs and specialist were key factors in my choice of The British Hernia Center {TBHC}. Antigua is a small country of less than 100,000 persons. Antigua state of the art hospital. we have very qualified medical practitioners, yet the hospital is still restricting elective surgery. Private Clinics cater to those with Insurance Coverage. Cost motivated me to search afield. The British Hernia Centre, with experienced professionals and costs, 50% of costs in Antigua. TBHC specialize in Hernias. From first contact to the end, Jenny at TBHC was friendly, levelheaded, informative, helpful. The Lindo Clinic at St. Mary was welcoming. Professionals informative and caring. Not wishing to be late I arrived at 7AM for an 8:30AM appointment. I was immediately taken to Room 208, spotlessly clean and fully equipped. My home base until my departure at 1:30PM. I had continual visits from professionals: The Surgeon, Nurses, anesthetists, Catering for lunch, and more. Friendly, relaxing, informative. Room 208 featured the NHS Wi-Fi, a large TV, comfortable chairs, bed, ensuite, Private Loo and streaming sunshine. I was the third operation of the day. A short walk down the stairs with Peter, the anesthetists. I was asked to lie n the operating table. The atmosphere was unbelievably friendly with music and even some signs of dance rhythm by all including myself. The local procedure seemed to last no longer 30 minutes. I was awake although I may well have dosed off. I was aware that I was being operated on. I felt no pain, just sensations of the stages. The transfer to the gurney was painless, the monitored wait in recovery lasted a little longer than I thought necessary. But what do I know about these things? I was in professional care. I arrived back in 208 almost exactly at Midday, A sumptuous lunch, caring professionals to the discharge. An UBER ride back to Boddington Gardens, London, W3. A short afternoon 4K walk in Glastonbury Park. In the days that followed my daily routine averaged 7K. On the 7th day I removed the dressings. Back in Antigua and glad to report a happy ending. Thank you TBHC. Thank you, Lindo Clinic, St. Mary’s.
I chose the British Hernia Centre because judging by their website they were experienced and professional, but I wish I had done further research. To make the story short: - £200 initial consultation with the surgeon K Moorthy: lasted exactly 5min, he just had a little poke at my hernia and told me to call back the next week to schedule a scan and surgery. No information about the risk/benefits of the different methods of mesh repair, the different types of mesh, the recovery, the risk of reoccurence, etc. - Surgeon told me before the surgery that he would use a mesh from Medtronic, which was fine by me. However while reading my notes a few hours after the surgery, I found out that he actually implanted a PVPM Proceed mesh by Ethicon Johnson&Johnson, mesh that has caused numerous problems leading to market withdrawals and recalls over the last decade, and is currently the object of thousands of lawsuits in the US. When I confronted the surgeon by email and face to face during the post op consultation he dismissed my concerns, stating that it was an "equally reputable mesh manufacturer" and that "it wasn't his fault that the mesh he wanted to use wasn't in the theatre so he used whatever was available that day". - I have reported my dissatisfaction to the team via email and via their post op questionnaire but of course, nobody ever got back to me. I wish the story stopped here, but now I am 6 months post surgery and my hernia has returned, meaning that the surgery has failed and I need to seek medical attention again. I am only sharing my story because I wish I had been warned by previous patients and stayed away from this surgeon and the BHC. I spent a lot of money to pay for this procedure and I'm now stuck with a potentially defective and dangerous mesh, and another hernia to fix.
Had a Nissen Fundoplication for a Hiatal Hernia just over two weeks ago under the care of Dr Moorthy. The outcome has been outstanding, absolutely zero acid reflux, zero complications and I was able to return to a physical job just 10 days after the operation, I even had no need for painkillers or any other medication 48 hours after the op. The staff were fantastic and the whole thing which I was very anxious about went brilliantly. For the first time in 7 years since the operation I have had no need for Ompeprazole and even after 10 days I can swallow just about all foods as long as I chew thoroughly. I have had very little Colic, am able to belch which they say after such operations is rare and have had absolutely not cid reflux which I had so severely led to Barretts Oesophagus by age 27. If the long term outcome is as good as it has been so far, these guys will have literally changed my lives. The money I spent to have this privately done was worth every penny and I cannot thank these guys enough. If you are still undecided then at the very least go speak to these guys. David Cox
