Beautiful church. I'd not been before and was taken aback by the inside. It's lovely and the grounds surrounding it are amazing. I went to celebrate a christening which was wonderful. They also have a memorial tree for the Christmas period where you can hang a bauble in loving memory of the people who won't be here this year. So ething I will most definitely do and quite thankful for the opportunity to do so!
Lovely concert Bournville Village Primary school, hand bella an carol's plus participation. Brilliant and well done to all. The church is very much community based enjoyed
The Church of St Francis of Assisi in Bournville, Birmingham is a central feature of George Cadbury’s model village. The church was built in 1925 by local architect William Alexander Harvey in the Romanesque style of an early Christian Basilica. The resulting brick structure is a beautifully light and airy space, and adheres to the Arts and Crafts principles clear throughout Bournville Village. The interior is more like a medieval Spanish church than an English parish church. The ceiling is high, and the clerestory fills the space with light. The Scottish granite columns are the first noticeable decoration with intricately carved capitals. Some capitals were carved by William Bloye, who also carved the timber north tympanum. The south tympanum and the remaining capitals are the work of John Poole. The sanctuary was reordered in 1930, adding the current marble pulpit. The curtain behind the altar was handmade in 1975. The organ dates from 1903 and was originally in the Girls' Dining Room in the Bournville Works, moved to the church in 1926.
Nice church. Very helpful staff. We went for the quinborne choir concert and they looked after disabled and elderly visitors.
Visited for a performance from the Rock Choir for Christmas. Had a lovely evening in beautiful surroundings p
Interesting that the church opens its space to community groups and to quite new innovative approaches to improving community life beyond the spiritual. Yesterday was a "speed dating " event for people involved in charity and community work in the local area. Getting people connected and generating networks of the like minded
Land had been set aside for a church and church hall by Bournville Village Trust in 1905. The church hall now part of the community centre was built in 1913, and the church building was consecrated in 1925. It was designed by William Alexander Harvey. The font was given as a memorial in 1984. It is of Portland stone and was designed and made by John Poole. The chapel was designed by Selby Clewer and built in 1966. It was given by Laurence and Joyce Cadbury in memory of three of their children.
Very nice church with Cadbury family history going back almost a century. Visit during Birmingham Heritage Week open day. Have updated the project at Birmingham We Are /Birmingham Gems.
lovely old detail in this hexagon.
Lovely church. Unfortunately we were there for a friend's funeral.
