Story

Borders General Hospital (BGH), (locally known as the "BGH") is a district general hospital on the outskirts of Melrose, Scotland. It has 328 beds and offers a wide range of healthcare services.ServicesIt is the main hospital in the Scottish Borders and serves the counties of Selkirkshire, Roxburghshire, Peeblesshire and western Berwickshire. Other counties and Berwickshire are served by Berwick infirmary* and larger hospitals in the City of Edinburgh. It has an Accident and Emergency Department and a Macmillan Cancer Unit. The Hospital is governed by NHS Borders, its Director of Nursing and executive board whom are sited at the board's HQ in nearby Newstead. Beside the Hospital, within the grounds, is the NHS Borders education and conference centre which comprises lecture theatres, the training and professional development department, the IT suite and a comprehensive library.HistoryThe hospital was designed and built to replace the ageing and unfit "Peel Hospital" of Caddonfoot near Galashiels; the former hospital which served first as a wartime hospital during World War 2 and was later expanded in line with NHS introduction and population expansion in the Scottish Borders. The South-East Regional Hospital Board approved plans for a new 375-bed hospital at the Huntlyburn site. Borders General was built by John Laing & Son and opened in 1988 creating over 1000 jobs initially run by Borders General Hospital NHS Trust which was succeeded by NHS Borders. It was also home to the Scottish Borders Campus of Napier University nursing college up until their service withdrawal in 2010/11. Current care services include general-medical and general-surgical receiving and assessment wards, a Department of medicine for the elderly (DME) unit, a children's ward (Ward 15 Noah's Ark), ENT suite, audiology, pre/peri and post-natal wards with a labour suite, theatre, Emergency department, dementia assessment unit, gynaecology ward, cafe (operated by WRVS) and large outpatients suite.

Can’t thank you all enough caring for my wonderful 90 year old Dad. He’s one of many I know and you are all overworked but Dad and I are so grateful and in awe of you all. Thank you and hoping government can put some radical changes in place to really help you. Heather & Bill Dickson PS Lovely Doctor on placement chatted to us today 31August 2022. Ward 7 room 4. He was totally on the ball.
Unfortunately had to go to hospital during holiday and from stepping in the door the staff and Doctor were great. Welcoming smiles and very pleasant even when could see how busy they all were and the amount of ambulance emergencies coming in. NHS are an amazing team that I am proud that we have.
Thanks so much to all at the eye clinic on Tuesday 25th after I was referred there from spec savers in Gala, you managed to fit me in last minute and I was seen straight away and medication subscribed so grateful to you all, thank you.
had to write to say how thankful i am for the caring and efficient support for my daughter at accident and emergency on thursday the 17th of november 2022. people trying their best and want to show my appreciation
M wife had a lovely visit with Dr. Kyamidis in the Dermatolagy Department. A professional. friendly and informative doctor that made my wifes visit a pleasant experience.
Staff very caring and supportive in Aand E and ward 5 HDU and even though short staffed still got percent care.
I had to call 111 yesterday for an issue with my elderly mum. They referred us to the BGH to the minor injuries unit giving us a set appointment time. We were seen on time when we arrived and received an X-ray within 15 minutes of arrival. The whole appointment time from start to finish was 40 minutes and included a consultation with the nurse, X-ray and then follow up with a Dr and a prescription being given. The staff were all extremely helpful and couldn’t have done more to help. I would highly recommend using the 111 service first rather than just pitching up at A&E.
From arriving in the a n e department to being admitted the nursing staff were exceptional and the night staff made my stay more comfortable as i had an urine and kidney infection also ecoli..i was feeling pretty awful but the staff did make me more comfortable.thankyou bgh.your exceptional
Just like to thank the staff of ward 7 for the amazing treatment I have received from the staff.
Went to the A&E and Rhona was amazing. So helpful, comforting and professional. She made an otherwise terrible ordeal easier to manage and gave us great advice on how to proceed afterwards. Everyone we encountered at the A&E were brilliant.
