Birmingham Buddhist Centre

About

The Birmingham Buddhist Centre is part of the worldwide Triratna Buddhist Community making Buddhism accessible in our modern lives.

Story

The Birmingham Buddhist Centre is part of the worldwide Triratna Buddhist Community (formerly known as the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, or FWBO), which was founded in 1967 by Sangharakshita. The Triratna Buddhist Community makes Buddhism and meditation accessible as a living tradition in the modern world.

Our Centre in Moseley is the heart of a network of spiritual friendships. Some members live together, others live with their families or alone. We practise and teach meditation and Buddhism to anyone who is interested. We welcome visits from schools, colleges, interfaith groups and other interested parties, or can arrange visiting speakers and meditation teachers. We also lead Buddhist funerals.

Attached to the centre is a small shop offering a wide range of Buddhist literature, meditation and yoga equipment, incense, cards, Buddhist figures, and more. The centre also has a well kept garden at the rear which is available to use as a quiet space by our visitors. We also have shrine rooms that can be used, by arrangement, for silent meditation and a library where you are welcome to come and study the wisdom of the Buddha.

I joined an intro course sometime in late '22 and I have kept attending since then. As with many people it was learning about Meditation and Buddhism that initially attracted me to the Centre, but since then I have met so many wonderful people who massively contribute to my desire to return every week. The management team, volunteers and visitors all welcome everyone openly. If you have ever been interested in Meditation or Buddhism, do consider attending!
This place has changed my life for the good immeasurably. I started going to the BBC at the beginning of April 2022 whilst going through a difficult divorce. Since then I have attended regularly, once to twice per week. The people there are wonderfully kind, supportive and tolerant of people's differences. It's such a superb place to hang out, I don't think I have ever heard a negative word or comment spoken about anyone in the whole time I've been there. The demographics are diverse - old, young, ethnicity, sexual orientation - it makes no difference. I don't think I'll ever stop going :-
Beautiful building, friendly people, and great courses. Whether you are interested in learning to meditate, or you want to learn about Buddhism, or do some yoga, the Birmingham Buddhist Centre is a great place to come. Also very accessible for those like myself with disabilities/health conditions.
A wonderful community with great course, meditation, yoga and Buddhism. Very friendly and welcoming.
Very warm and inviting place. Everyone is welcome here. Excellent range of regular structured meditation and study courses. There is always someone to have a cup of tea and good conversation with. Very highly recommended.
I used to go there to learn meditation. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. You don't have to be a Buddhist to go. But if you want to learn more about this sect of Buddhism, then this is the ideal place to come. They've always got various things going and everyone is welcome. Nice for an introduction and more if you wish.
Great friendly atmosphere and you can get involved as little or as much as you want. They provide drop-in meditation sessions and courses. Donations are asked for in the tea break but it's made clear if you are unable or unwilling to donate to support the Centre that is absolutely fine.
Good for the body and soul. Triratna tradition. There are yoga classes on most days at the centre. Including Iyenger yoga. Check the website. Short 1 hour meditation classes take place online on Wednesday and Thursday. Longer meditation sessions are available.. Check out the website.
A tranquil place, an excellent sound bath, from Edan Sound.
I often come here for meetings. Parking for disabled drivers on drive and unrestricted street parking for able bodied drivers. Internal steps with reasonable handrails. Wheelchair lift but not usually anybody around who knows how to make it work at the times when I visit.
