I would personally discourage anyone from enrolling in the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy MSc. In my experience, the program seemed to align with 'gender critical' views, which made me feel unsafe in myself and less confident in the theories we were being taught and expected to apply with our clients. I felt deeply uncomfortable as a person of colour, both due to the readings assigned and the group work we participated in. In my opinion, racist comments were not taken seriously by staff members. I attempted to raise complaints in class and through more formal channels but felt dismissed. I did not feel supported or safe within the course, and I found that other queer students and students of colour I spoke to expressed feelings of discomfort as well. While psychoanalysis has the potential to engage in progressive discussions around race, gender, and social issues, in my view, this course took a more conservative approach. I believe a lot of my issues lay with the counselling department, however, I found Birkbeck as a whole to be unsupportive as a queer person of colour.
I enjoyed my time at Birķbeck. Very supportive. On the whole, loved the teaching. Only one class did I regret. Lecturer was a waist if time as she had poor class management skills. Would definitely do another course there.
**Worst Review of Birkbeck University:** "Is it reasonable to pay ten thousand pounds to a university expecting full support from teachers and staff, only to be driven to the brink of mental and psychological exhaustion? That’s exactly what happened to me during my time at Birkbeck University. I spent an entire year under immense stress, caused by the institution that should have been helping me succeed. As we approach a new academic year this October, I am completely drained from simply trying to communicate with the university about my grades. I needed them to transfer to a different institution, but instead, I discovered I had a re-assignment that I wasn’t even informed of. My teacher assured me I didn’t need to rewrite it, yet I still submitted it, desperate to get my grades in order to leave. And guess what? They failed me! The worst part? The personal tutor assigned to 'support' me refuses to listen. His idea of helping me was mocking my dissatisfaction, rudely telling me, 'You don’t like anything but your university!' instead of offering any real assistance. If you're considering enrolling at Birkbeck University, think a million times before committing your money. They offer no real support, and instead of guiding you, they might just push you to the edge. A complete waste of time and money. Thank you, Birkbeck, for absolutely nothing."
I didn’t attend university for some time as I was struggling with mental health and issues at the time. I was also in communication with someone from student advice at the university to support me. At the end of the term, the university contacted me and told me that I will be terminated from the course even though I explained to them I was suffering with mental health and having personal medical issues that took place. The email I received from them after explaining this was ridiculous. They also told me they will no longer be responding even though my last email was me telling them the situation. After this I have sent another email this time with more details and this was sent about a month ago and they have not responded as they said they wouldn’t. I have attached the first emails.
I enjoyed my time at Birkbeck. The quality of the education I received along with the University of London seal, made the degree worthwhile in my opinion. I've also been accepted into a global top 50 University for my doctorate program after leaving Birkbeck.
My son attends Birkbeck and he seems very happy at the college. He has just completed a Foundation year providing a bridge from Further Education BTEC to university level work.
For it is worth, my experience here was quite poor. I think the biggest problem with this University and possibly the rest of UK universities is that they effectively operate as businesses, despite being charities. In the constant search for fresh "blood" i.e., students, the College will make promises, sell themeselves, spend thousands on marketing just to get your money. Leveraging the availability on student loans, they showed little interest on the student as an investment, but constantly made me feel as a "milk cow" in exchange for effectively a mostly useless piece of paper. The system is broken mind you. I met lots of amazing academics, incredible people full of drive and passion. They, like the students, find themselves in poorly paid, tough jobs. Instead, the students find themselves in debt, stressed and often jobless, event at the end of the course. To anyone thinking of studying here, I suggest you seriously ignore their marketing, their research status and anything else. I am sure there is a lot worse out there, still this education is largely overpriced and if you ask me, mostly useless. Just think, will I get a job after I finish whatever I plan to get myself in heavy debt for? Who is to blame? No one I guess. As long there's demand for it, courses will be supplied. I think the biggest issues is that students nearly always overestimate the actual benefits of formal education, without carefully assessing the financial implications. Student loans are loans, not grants! Good luck.
International student very happy with the experience so far : This is the end of my second term and I only have good things to say: -Excellent and passionate professors. -International student have an extremely low hiring rate after completing their studies at any UK university, but Birkbeck has a coaching service where they train you to learn how to give better interviews, how to improve your CV, Linkedin profile, etc, etc, etc. Excellent service! -I got an internship in a technology company through their program Digital Careers. -I applied to a mentorship program and I got assigned 2 incredible mentors. Both of them are Birkbeck alumni, one works at Google and the other one is a very well known professional in London in the area of technology. Both of them have shared quite valuable insights with me. -I got 2 free certificates in extracurricular programs. -Support on every need you could have, from mental support to financial guide. -You get access to countless amount of books, journals, free courses etc. -You get access to use the library of Senate House which is AMAZING! I only have so many good things to say about the uni :
I studied three years at Birkbeck for a History of Art BA and then did a further year of study for my MA. The evening set up meant I could still work and the courses were so engaging that I felt refreshed rather than exhausted. The vast majority of the lecturers are extremely knowledgeable and teach their subjects with passion. I could not have got my degrees at a conventional university and am forever grateful for the unique teaching system at Birkbeck.
The campus is excellent, I came here for an educational meeting. Bus 1 from Waterloo and straight to Russell Square and from there are clear signs to help you find your way.
