the house was built between 1801 and 1809 as a military hospital serving the Napoleonic Forts at Berry Head. From 1833 until his death in 1847 it was occupied by Henry Francis Lyte and his family, and it was here that he wrote the famous hymn "Abide with Me" just four months before his death, inspired by his surroundings and the magnificent views.
the grounds were worked on by French prisoners of were who were given temporary shelter by Lyte after they were shipwrecked en-route to imprisonment. you will notice many trees, plants and Herbs introduced during this time by reverend lyte from his visits abroad. today the house retains much of its original charm nestling at the waters edge overlooking some of the finest sea and coastal views in the world. its six acres of private grounds and woodland adjoin the berry head country park, originally part of the estate and now owned by national trust. the park which can be accessed from the grounds offers a ramblers paradise with miles of coastal paths along the dramatic and unspoiled coastline to the river dart and beyond, with small coves, rare wild flowers and the multitude of sea birds which find sanctuary in the cliffs.
