First visit back here in over a decade. A lovely place for a tranquil walk, especially mid-week when it is relatively quiet. Nice gardens and grounds to walk around including the walled garden lots of Pumpkins at the moment. Various walks available of varying lengths as well as good facilities. Well worth a visit.
Such a lovely and tranquil place to visit. The house itself was closed due to its £2.3 million refurb but the grounds are really nice to walk around. You can take your dog and stick to the designated paths or just roam around the fields and woodland areas within the grounds. There is a play area for the kids and a restaurant, plus a lovely little coffee shop built into one of the old outhouse buildings and a nice courtyard to sit in. There is a walled garden growing all sorts of vegetables which are fun to look at with the kids. Car parking is free and there are 2 sets of toilets on site.
Lovely space to enjoy on a sunny afternoon. We arrived with only half an hour before closing so didn't have to pay which was good because we'd only come to look at the plant sale!. The house and gallery were closed for renovations, so not sure the entry fee would have been worth it anyway, hence only 4 stars. The planting was ok but not overly original. There was a lovely cafe with outdoor seating around a small lawn which looked lovely.
Firstly, an observation; we have visited Beningbrough on a number of occasions over the years and always find that it can be awkward to find depending on one's direction of approach. The easiest route for us is the ring road around York which is well signed. As we had a dog with us there were a few areas we could not access such as the house and walled garden but each is available if turns are taken to walk one's pet whilst the other person explores. We had a warm greeting from the volunteer staff at the admissions office and accessed the grounds easily. First stop was the café for a coffee and, again, service was excellent. The surroundings are lovely to sit in and relax. We were provided with a small map indicating a choice of three routes around the grounds and chose our path according to the distance we wished to walk. Clear indications are provided as to the nature of the ground and any issues which was helpful. We had a good walk, helped by the sunshine and returned to take turns admiring the gardens. This was followed by a simple but excellent lunch at the café, again with very helpful service. A further exploration of the grounds was completed before we departed having spent a very pleasant time here. A place we shall continue to visit.
Beautiful gardens with the most beautiful cherry blossom. There is very a nice farm cafe nearby. The bluebell woods are near the pike ponds by the exit, it's like fairyland. The hall and galleries are currently closed, but we still very much enjoyed our day.
Lovely national trust property which often has events on during the school holidays for children. We visited while the Easter trail was on which included some fun activities for the kids and kept them occupied for a good hour and a half before we settled for lunch on the lawn. Great walled garden to explore with lots of space outside for picnics, guided walks which lead to the farm cafe with fantastic ice cream and a pleasant walk along the river too.
My dad, his dog, my sister, her dog and my 2 nieces 7 & 9 were with me. The girls loved the adventure playground and my sister and the girls loved the walled garden with all the fruit and veg growing in it. We really appreciated the water bottle refill stations they had and the coffee hut and cafe had a lovely selection available. We went out over the grounds and found a tower and the river running along it. Unfortunately the river boat that goes along only operates during the week so we missed out on that. Dogs were very tired after tramping around after a few hours. It's not an all day destination, but very nice for 2-3 hours in lovely weather!
The house is closed until summer next year, as they are undertaking extensive renovations. The facinating laundry rooms are still open though, as is the potting shed, second hand book stall, shop and the restaurant when they have enough staff. The real draw though is the beautiful garden, with a walled kitchen garden, fantastic herbaceous borders and a wildflower border, which have all given me lots of ideas. There are two shady woodland walks, one leading to a super adventure playground which the kids loved. The whole lot is surrounded by hundreds of hectares of open parkland, with thousands of magnificent old trees.
Despite the hall not being open as it's being refurbished it's a lovely offer to visit. Very peaceful. Well tended garden and nursery makes it a pleasant walk. Cafe setting is superb. Good and drink reasonably priced.
Beautiful gardens at this national trust property. Really nice cafe. The house was closed for renovations but would definitely come back.
