A lovely and interesting place to spend an hour or two. Three different periods of history can be experienced here. There's a good information board which tells you all about the medieval-era motte & bailey castle/mounds the Bass of Inverurie. Then there's some ancient Pictish carved stones, found in between the two mounds. Lastly there's the town cemetery which is best viewed from the top of the larger mound.nA bit of a shame there's no parking facilities, you can either walk from the town or park with consideration in the lane opposite which is for the local waterworks.nmy photo of the cemetery, showing the circular arrangements of gravestones, is taken from the Bass of Inverurie
The earthen remains of a medieval motte and Bailey castle, constructed early C12th and was the base for The Bruce when he fought the first battle of Inverurie in 1308. It was also the focus of the second battle in December 1745. Only the earth mounds remain but they are well sited, to commend the river crossings and the road from Aberdeen. Level access to the churchyard but the mounds have stairs
A Motte & Bailley dating from the 12th century, now sitting in the middle of a graveyard. At the base of the larger of 2 mounds is a good information board providing a history of the site.nAlso, sited between the 2 mounds enclosed in glass are four Pictish Symbol Stones, so have a look at those while you're visiting.nAlmost nowhere to park, maybe space for 2 cars near the river Urie end, otherwise do as we did and park in the water works drive opposite.
The Bass sits in the confluence of the Don and the Urie in an obviously good defensive position with great views over the much more recent town graveyard and the valley where Inverurie sits
