I took in my grandmothers charm bracelet to get the catch fixed which had been slightly bent and was not slotting into the lock properly. When I received it back the whole of the antique lock had been replaced with a poor quality modern one. When I went back to ask where the original antique lock on the bracelet had gone I was told it went "to be melted down for scrap, to keep the cost of the repair down" when I asked if he could please say there had been a mistake and get it back I was told it was "too late". I was deeply shocked to find that a professional jeweler could not discern the quality and craftsmanship that went into the one he 'threw away', it had the original, tiny screws that held the lock together and was beautifully heavy. The lock was worth a lot of money, let alone it's sentimental value and I was not even given a refund for the cheap modern lock which I would never wear. I am devastated, a family heirloom gone that can never be replaced.

FROM, Mr M Chaplin-Axminster Jewellers In Response to post by e_elsbels on 28th Dec 2009 This SILVER bracelet was brought in for repair on 28th Aug 2009 along with a number of other silver repairs and soldering jobs, they were all discussed with the customer at this time and on the silver bracelet as the silver padlock(catch) was worn and had been bent several times and was beyond reasonable repair it was decided to replace it with a new one of equal quality, this was written on the repair docket No 8611, a copy given to the customer and a copy is kept for our records. Being in the jewellery business for many years and previously in the antiques trade for many more I am able to state that this was not an antique bracelet and it was not fitted with an antique padlock, the padlock on the silver bracelet had impressed screw heads on the body to look like it was screwed together but these were only impressions and not real screws, the replacement was of equal quality and weight to the original. Unfortunately the sentimental value of the silver padlock was not discussed and I was not made aware of this by the customer it was not mentioned that the customer wished to keep the padlock for sentimental reasons had it of been there would have been no problem at all in returning it to the customer. When the repairs were collected they were all laid out on the counter and shown to, and inspected by the customer the customer was happy with them and did not mention the original padlock, paid me and left, it was not until at least a week later that the customer returned and said that it was an antique bracelet and that the padlock should not have been replaced (which as previously stated was agreed with the customer before any work commenced was writen on the repair docket and given to the customer, the duplicate of this is kept for our records) the customer then asked if she could have the original padlock back, I then told the customer that it had been put in with the scrap metal (recycled in modern terms, not thrown away) and unfortunately that after a week it was too late to retrieve it, The customer then left the shop without giving any oppertunity to discuss further the customer did not ak for or even mention a refund at this or any other time and has not been back. I personally am obviously sorry she is upset about this but do believe this is a miss-understanding from when the repair was first brought in and would emphasise again that there is written evidence of this. I therefore believe that the emphasis the customer has placed in her posting on 28th Dec 2009 is not proportionate to the value ot the item or to the cost of the repair (of course sentimental value is a diferent matter that I think that anyone can understand). I would never wish to have a dissatisfied customer and as a gesture of genuine goodwill if the customer wishes to come in and see me I will gladly refund the cost of the repair which for this individual item was £9 and the scrap value of the original padlock which at approximately 3grams of silver would be .75p at current rates, it would have been less at the time due to the increase in metal prices, but as stated this would have been taken off the cost of repair to help keep the cost down to the customer, the original padlock would have been of no value in the condition it was in which was much worse than slightly bent as stated by the customer as it is a very simple job to straighten if that is sufficient which we do very often.
