The serene and ancient earthworks transport you to a time long past, creating a sense of awe and wonder. The beauty of the surrounding forest and the historical significance of the site make it a perfect destination for a peaceful hike and a deep dive into history. Users should respect each other and clean up their picnic mess afterwards.
An old Iron Age hill fort. It was built about 500BC. There are still substantial earthworks to be seen amongst the trees. It’s hard to see nowadays but this would have been quite a prominent position of high ground. There’s a little info board giving some history.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Great looking place right in the middle of Epping forest, came across it by chance while on a walk with family. The information sign gives a brief description of the history of this site. My 5 year old son had a blast running up and down the banks.
If you are ever in Epping Forest walk about 15mins from Jack's Hill carpark and you will come across these Iron Age earthworks. Reputedly but disproven where Boudicca's last stand took place the area is given over to nature rather than English Heritage which ensures an ancient ambience for a hidden picnic with your children.
Lovely clearing in the woods, you can see where there would have been fortifications etc. Very peaceful and clean.
Nice spot in the forest. Settelment was massive and the banks are still well pronounced and visible. Worth a visit.
You will not see many people there. Does help if people take their rubbish away after having a picnic there. Overall all very nice
Epping forest is an oasis on the edge of London. Well worth a visit at any time of the year. Easily reached on the underground.
Such a lovely place with lots to explore and honestly a good day spent for a family trip. Plenty of history.
Iron age complex, you can quite clearly see the defensive banks.
