Very interesting museum with free admission. Receptionist recommended we start on the top floor as that has history of the harbour on it. We then worked our way down. Plenty to look at and read. There's a wonderful model of an oil rig which goes up the centre of the building. The windows all show the harbour outside which is still very busy. Fascinating exhibits, especially I'd you have an interest in the oil and gas industry or the history of the fishing industry. The cleanest toilets I've seen anywhere! No café but plenty close by. If you bring children they'll enjoy it for about an hour.
Excellent collection of historical pieces related to Scotland's shipping industry, especially the northeast coast. It shows and tells including some videos how robust the fishing capital Aberdeen was a century ago when they shipped fish all over Scotland. Aberdeen eventually became more of an oil capital after oil was discovered in 1970s approx. 100 miles offshore. If you enjoy nautical history or marine life, you'll love this place.
The Aberdeen Maritime Museum is a hidden gem that beautifully captures the rich maritime heritage of the city.nnThe exhibitions are thoughtfully curated, providing an insightful look into Aberdeen's history as a key port and its connection to the North Sea oil and gas industry. The museum's layout is spacious, and the variety of interactive displays make it engaging for visitors of all ages.nnWhat stands out is the attention to detail in the ship models and the full-scale displays that illustrate the evolution of shipbuilding and offshore technology. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, happy to share stories and answer any questions. Plus, the museum’s location overlooking the harbor adds a unique charm, making it a perfect stop for both locals and tourists alike.nnI highly recommend taking time to explore this museum—it's educational, family-friendly, and absolutely free! A must-visit if you're in Aberdeen.
Great place for people who are interested in the history of maritime in Aberdeen. There are a fair display of ships and their history. It is really interesting to see the evolution of ships from the past to present.nnThe key highlight for me was the dimensions of the oil rig. I was always curious how big it was, and am extremely amazed at how gigantic it was!nnBest part of it all, the entrance is free! So do not hesitate to come down to quench your curiosity about Maritime in Aberdeen!
An excellent museum in the centre of Aberdeen which comprehensively showcases the strong maritime history of the city and area. If it were not for the nationalisation of shipyards over a certain size the profitable Hall Russell yard may still be building ships today. The history of shipbuilding is well illustrated throughout. The fossil fuel energy industry has been the foundation of Aberdeen and area's prosperity over the last 50 years and is well featured. The scale model of the now decommissioned Murchison platform which spans 3 floors of the museum is impressive even if it could do with a dust in some places . Elements of the renewable energy industry are starting to appear showing that the museum maintains currency with the energy transformation.
