FYInDear Respected Members,nnI am writing to inform you that Zakariyya Masjid in Bolton is currently under investigation by the UK Charity Commission due to concerns regarding the potential misappropriation of donor funds.nn1. **Committee Meeting:** On Monday, 29th July, the committee convened to discuss how to respond to the Charity Commission’s letter.nn2. **Trustee Concerns:** It has come to light that many trustees at Zakariyya Masjid lack awareness of the processes related to the collection and distribution of funds. Furthermore, several trustees are unable to read or write English, raising concerns about their ability to effectively oversee financial matters.nn3. **Lack of Accountability:** There is a significant lack of accountability regarding the substantial funds that the mosque regularly raises.nnThe Charity Commission has requested detailed documentation, including bank receipts, wire transfers, and deposits, for several major fundraising campaigns undertaken by the mosque. Some of these campaigns include:nn1. **Afghanistan Relief Fund:** Nearly £300,000 was raised for Afghanistan. The local Afghan community in Bolton has also requested transparency about how these funds were utilized. However, the trustees have been unable to provide comprehensive accounts detailing the expenditure in Afghanistan.nn2. **Rohingya Muslims Fund:** Zakariyya Masjid raised over £700,000 for the Rohingya Muslims, which marked a record-breaking fundraiser. Most of these funds were collected in cash, and there is currently no accounting for how the £700,000 was spent.nn3. **Unauthorized Palestine Trip:** Against the wishes of the other trustees, Edris Seth organized a trip to Palestine, covering the costs of airline tickets and hotels in advance using mosque funds. This decision appears to have been influenced by personal motives, possibly to rival his brother, Mawlana Rashid. Due to limited community interest in this trip, the mosque incurred a loss of over £40,000, representing donors' hard-earned money on what appears to be a failed venture. It is highly probable that the Charity Commission will require the trustees to reimburse the £40,000 personally.nnIt is the trustees' responsibility to inform the community that the Charity Commission has initiated investigative inquiries. Regrettably, no official communication has been made to the members thus far.nnI urge all members to request copies of the correspondence received from the Charity Commission from Edris Seth. Should he refuse, you are entitled to contact the Charity Commission directly and request copies. Additionally, we should demand to review the responses Edris Seth will be submitting to the Charity Commission, ensuring that members and donors can conduct their due diligence.nnThank you for your attention to this important matter.

Epic masjid in the heart of Bolton, although it's not my nearest by distance, it's still what I regard as my local because of how much I like going there. Really nice inside, always clean, organisers are very helpful and friendly, and they run a lot of classes for men and women which is nice.nnWould highly recommend checking this out if you're passing by, or if you're a local definitely try and head in more often
As we entered the ladies section 2 women were stood there and we were told children under 10 were not allowed in to pray. I was devastated when I was told that I couldn't pray with my baby who was sat in her car seat, I was then told to pray in the corridor with her which was appalling there were people I say people as men were coming in aswl through the entrance which I was told was the ladies entrance coming and going with the door open anyone could have access to her while I would anhave been praying. We were then told that it's more rewarding if we pray at home because we have young children! This lady then looked my niece up and down and I said don't worry she's over 10 she's just short for her age!nWhat I found more frustrating was that as I was leaving I saw so many boys who clearly looked under 10 entering the mosque via the mens entrance and I didn't see any of them come back out again!!
I am actually so disappointed the women’s section was ran by very rude people some even raised their voices. . We travelled for iftaar from far and wanted our daughters and nieces to experience teraweeh, some for the first time. We were told that we can pray in the corridor where men were free to walk through or another told us we could go to another mosque. We were then told very condescendingly that it’s more reward for us to pray at home. Ok then please the sisters running this section pray at home too.nnAlso we know this that we women can pray at home but we were travellers and wanted our children to experience the beauty of congregation prayer as our local town does not have a female section.nnOne thing I will say is there’s a way to speak to people and approach things. This was not it. Also Without knowing our situation we were unwelcomed at this mosque. May Allah guide us and forgive us all. Ameen.
