I wanted to make sure to walk a portion of the York City Walls during my visit to this beautiful city! I am so glad I did. The walls are the longest medieval town walls in England. They were built by the Romans in 71 AD with work done later by Vikings and Normans. The current stone structure mainly dates to the 13th century.nnPretty incredible and enjoyable to walk!!
A beautiful walk on the City walls. A fabulous behind the scenes view, walking behind York Minster, with its work yard and bee hives full of activity. With views across rooftops, the station, the castle and the scents of beautiful gardens with masses of heady blossom, it's stunning. You will pass a row of terrace houses with some cat ornaments on the window ledges, just before the imposing Victorian Chapel, built in 1880 now apartments. They a beautifully kept. Apologies, as we had to have a pause and a nosey as they are an inspiring sight. I didn't take pictures here, just soaked it in. We had a walk through the museum gardens too, which was full of tulips and blossom, it was worth slight detour visit. We did the circular walk clockwise but we were told by a lovely lady that anti clockwise was the better walk We will do it again another day to compare them It was a very warm day, hats and suncream advised, it gets hot up there. We stopped for refreshments at The Perky Peacock by the river, it seemed to be the right time for a stop. The dungeon at the cafe was cool in both ways, and it was a nice break off the walls. We checked for seating availability then went back up to the cafe to order. It has table service. We set of again, calling in a few quirky shops on the way. You could add pub stops on your walk, or make a day of it by calling at various locations off route, like the Medieval Hall pictured. A group were doing some excavations under the arches here.nThere are a few steps to climb or descend on the walk and you have to breathe in a little bit, to let people pass in places, if it's busy. I'd recommend doing the walk if you can.
Fun day out , exploring the walls and landscapes , you just have to pick weather well , not advised to do when cold or rainy or especially windy as some walls don’t have barriers so children must be supervised, no wheelchairs which is understandable. Most times the bridge is very busy and you have to let people past occasionally.
A beautiful experience walking along the York city walls, tracing over 1,000 years of history. I walked from Micklegate through to the riverside stretch, with lovely views of the whole city along the way. It’s truly spectacular and a peaceful way to see York from above.
Great experience and beautiful views. It can be little windy so it is good to have appropriate to weather clothing. There are benches you can sit and enjoy views or you can just go down to shop and come back. Entry was free . I read there is charge but it was completely free. This was second time I went there and I will come back Manny times in future. Get yourself selfie stick to help capture great moments.
