Definitely an improvement since our visit few years ago. Brand new kitchen facility in the self catering kitchen is top. Even the morning English breakfast is much better.nWe have been member of YHA and stayed in a few hostels in the past 10 years. Glad to see the improvement in this lovely hostel. We'd definitely come back soon.
The Hostel facilities and staff were awesome, I guess we should have realised that the sheep on the camp site would leave a mess but what I never thought about was the sheep and lambs climbing all over the tents and knocking some of our group's motorbikes over.nnWe did really enjoy our stay though.
Nicely placed hostel in own grounds and handy for the dark peak and show caverns. There's a mix of old rooms and modern additions with good en-suite available. Breakfast was good.
Stayed one night on the 11th May with friends, on motorbikes, Camping the Field was full of sheep and lambs and poo all over ,the lambs wrecked a few tents ,later in the evening the sheep surrounded the motorbike knocking my motorcycle over with around £120 worth of damage, sheep in a camping field is a no no , especially with lambs. As the mothers can get annoyed, have to say the food was good and so was the staff, had to park motorcycles in the car park later , we were told to park next to the field as the car park was full , so insist on parking in the car park .
- Accommodation:nAs usual with YHA, rooms that are great value for money. We had a 4-person en-suite 2 adults, 2 kids aged 4 and nearly 3. The bed are bunks so if you have young children that are out of cots, be cautious about the ladders. Our 4-year-old was on a top bunk and our nearly 3 was on the bottom. They love bunk beds. From visiting other YHAs, travel cots might be available if you call ahead.nnThere was a shower room and separate toilet room. The toilet was really low which was great for the little one. All nice and clean.nnThe room was a good size with a lovely view out the front through the massive windows. Normally I find YHA rooms too hot but this was just right. The other great thing that YHA Castleton apart was sound proofing. Most YHAs have banging doors, paper thin walls etc. But I was surprised when the doors didn't slam.nn- Food:nThe self-catering facilities are the same as other YHAs with never enough fidge or cupboard space. But definitely not a deal breaker, just need to play a bit of fridge TetrisnnThe food we ordered for the last night was good. And so was the breakfast.nn- Staff:nStaff were friendly and happy to help.nn- Accessibility:nThere are a few parking spaces for those with a disability. Then there is a approx. 30 meter path to reception. There are a few seats at reception. The toilets I came across in our room and one by reception were very low. I cannot comment on accessibility rooms, but the website mentions ambulant and wheelchair accessibility.nn- Things I'd like done differently:nOne of the things that I'd like to see better across all YHAs is consistency when booking dinner. Some places let you order your meal on the day at any time so the chef can start sooner. While others you can only order at 5pm. I'd prefer to be able to order at any time so if we were out, we can get back for 5pm and dinner would almost be ready.
