Yester Castle
"Please Note, The Goblin Hall is closed to the public. It is still possible to visit and view the castle and surrounding area.Yester Castle was originally built by Hugo de Giffard during the late twelfth century.Although much of it is in ruins, the castle is unique, atmospheric and full of surprises. Can you find the hidden Goblin Ha'?Google directions take you via a farm. The owners have requested that rather than crossing the farm, you enter via the road at Danskine or park at the golf course to get to the castle.Beware of steep drops and uneven footing. Ground is muddy in bad weather, come prepared. Please be responsible when approaching the castle, ensure dogs are kept on leads, take rubbish home etc."

You can park at the local golf course but remember to ask permission from the lovely lady who runs the place. She was nice enough to give directions to the ruins which you will need, as the castle is well hidden in the woods. As you approach it, you can sense a mysterious energy. It feels like almost the wizard is still here.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We do enjoy coming here and have visited quite a few times over the years. Parking and access can be a bit of a fiddle, but please park respectfully and don’t interfere with anything on the surrounding farms or golf course. There’s not much left of the castle these days - one curtain wall, a small part of the entrance, and of course the Goblin Ha’. Foundations of other walls can be seen, but your imagination must do most of the work. The siting of the castle is defensively ideal. Very steep drops to river on 3 sides and a dug out channel on the remaining side. It’s would have been impressive in its day, and would have been a lot more visible as there wouldn’t have been trees about. It’s well worth a visit
Very interesting place, hard to find best to park near the gate to Yester Walk path, it's very muddy so beware of that. Hope people will respect ruins, it's indeed a treasure!
Great castle to go and see, Has some lovely woodland walks, wee waterfall, only thing it is a bit difficult to get parking, found a place at the wee fishery close by, Very hunting and creepy place, there is definitely a presence there .Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Old ruin hidden in trees, with a spooky hall hidden underneath. Park at the golf course car park and walk about 10-15 minutes across the course. The staff in the reception were happy to give directions
It’s a great place to go exploring. The first thing you’ll need to do is find suitable Parking. There is no specific parking for the castle ruins so you’ll need to use your common sense eon finding a place to park. Getting there was through a really nice wooded walk though very muddy, I suggest wellies or boots. Take a torch to explore the Goblin Ha’, amazing atmosphere and cool aorta to explore.
Great wee hike for whole family, take wellies.... Can be very muddy on the trail. Don't forget to look under the bridges. They are very old. Also research the ghost stories before going. Have fun.
Really great place to visit - tucked away in the woods south of Gifford - kids loved going in the goblin ha and down the creepy stairs inside the ha. For those wanting to visit the walk from Danskine loch is straightforward once you look at it on the map along main path, left up the hill at the yester path signpost, turn right back down the hill and follow your nose. Alternatively you can follow the yester path from Gifford main street which is signposted for danskine google for a map and you get to the same path off up to the castle. Take a torch and some mud tolerant footwear. Finished the trip off with a visit to the lanterne rouge cafe in Gifford for great coffee.
Great walk but very muddy at the moment. As far as I can tell there are no signs to the castle and it's tricky to find. Park on the road to Duns near a set of gates and walk down a muddy track next to a stream until you reach a sign pointing to Garvald in one direction and Gifford on the other. Opposite is a path leading over a bridge. Follow that till you come to a fork in the path. Take the right path downhill then follow your nose till you come to the castle. I strongly suggest you wear wellies!
We parked at the golf course, and were given great directions from the staff there. Took us over 20 minutes to walk to it, and then 20 minutes to find the entrance to the grand hall but would thoroughly recommend!
