A wonderful place steeped in history with really helpful staff. There is a small shop and a refectory together with a small shop selling both religious and local artefacts. We were lucky enough to be there during a choral rehearsal which even grabbed my two daughters attention!
The Abby has been around since the 1100s and it still stands today in 2024. I have had the small pleasure of being a tiny part of it's history. Family weddings, memorial perades in the scouts/ red cross. To my Christening. I do have a seat in the lady's chapel with my name on.nnThe history of this building is inescapable soon as you come any where near it. The eyes of the past follow you while the present is before your eyes. The past is inside on and around you. It is where all three meet in one spot. Stand at any one spot on the Abby ground. Just shut up and take it in and you hear the ghosts from the past. No it isn't haunted, well... Maybe but it is an Abby a Church, aren't eyes supposed to be watching you?nnThat is the Wymondham Abby.
Beautifully preserved historic Abbey dating back as far as the 11th century. The town of Wymondham is a lovely picturesque market town. Well worth a visit wn route to Norwich.
Well worth a visit if you are in Wymondham. Famous for it's twin towers and altar screen.
Wymondham Abbey, located in the historic market town of Wymondham, Norfolk, is a striking example of medieval monastic architecture. Founded in 1107 by William d'Aubigny, Chief Butler of England, the abbey initially served a community of Benedictine monks. The imposing twin-towered west front, completed in the 14th century, is one of its most distinctive features. Despite its grandeur, the abbey faced turbulence during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, leading to the partial destruction of the monastic buildings.nnThe surviving structure became the parish church of Wymondham and has been cherished by the community for centuries. Its interior boasts an array of historical elements, including a Norman nave, a 15th-century hammerbeam roof adorned with angels, and intricate carvings. The abbey's serene setting, nestled amidst tranquil grounds and surrounded by the picturesque Norfolk countryside, enhances its spiritual ambiance.nnToday, Wymondham Abbey remains a vital center for worship and community events, while also attracting visitors keen to explore its rich heritage. Its blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and continued religious function underscores its enduring legacy as a beacon of spiritual and cultural history in Norfolk.
