The Wolvesey Castle is located a short distance away from the city centre. It is one of the few free attractions you can visit in Winchester. It has a wealth of history and requires the use of imagination as the site is a ruin. It is a short visit experience as there is not much to see. You will see locals using it for picnics or a place to rest. There are free tours available during the weekdays and this may enhance the experience. In general, it is a quick photo opportunity for a free experience.
Cool little EH property with some nice old ruins - unfortunately a lot of flooding so had to do some jumping over puddles to get around, and the latrines were flooded to the point they looked like a swimming pool filled with poo. There's some great leftover details like on some high up arches and a face from a stiff-leaf capital. Could do with a little bit more of a visitor centre and a nice path from the river, but otherwise very good.
Very much a ruin now but there's still plenty to look at. Bridges and steps allow access across the ruins and there are lots of information signs which are great and really bring the site to life.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Wolvesey Castle, located in Winchester, England, is a historic ruin that was once the residence of the powerful bishops of Winchester. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle was originally constructed by Bishop Henry of Blois, brother of King Stephen, as a fortified palace. It played a significant role in the medieval period, witnessing events such as the civil war between Stephen and Empress Matilda, known as The Anarchy. Although much of the castle is now in ruins, visitors can still explore the remains of the great hall, kitchens, and the defensive walls that tell the story of its illustrious past. Wolvesey Castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the ecclesiastical power and architectural grandeur of medieval England.
It's a pleasant site but really not a great deal to see except crumbling walls. Not one of the better castles you'll see, and not really worth the effort with so much else to see in Winchester
Only had a quick peek as the weather was thoroughly miserable. The opening or better closing hours are luckily a lie. Looks wonderful, will visit again and hopefully more thoroughly if I get to Winchester againVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I always thought that Winchester was a very interesting place. Steeped in awesomely important historic facts and figures. Wolvesey castle was one of the greatest medieval buildings in England. The palace of the powerful and wealthy Bishops of Winchester. One of the most important Norman Palaces in England. It was built during a period when Winchester was second only to London as a royal and ecclesiastical centre. The palace remained in use until the 1680s, when Bishop George Morley decided to build a new palace nearby. Though ruinous the buildings still evoke an impression of their former grandeur. The last great occasion here was on 25th July 1554 when the east hall was transformed with silk and gold hangings for Queen Mary and Philip of Spain's wedding banquet.
This building was certainly built as a fortified house and must have been magnificent in its day. It was good to have the signboards around the building giving a history of the times. I never new about the battles in the area of these times so it was great to hear about it now. Well worth a visit and it’s free!! Plenty of local parking
I enjoyed walking around Wolvesey Castle. Although it's in ruins it's an interesting place and gives you quite an insight into the history of Winchester.Visited onWeekday
