I wanted more than anything to have a great experience at art school, but sadly I left with a bitter taste in my mouth. There was an underlying atmosphere among students making it hard to feel at ease which in turn hindered a positive learning environment. I think part of this was due to the lack of student life as there were virtually no student union events on-campus or Societies to meet people instead the Southampton campus got all the fun. To be honest, while this university has its merits, there are institutions that will offer a much better art school experience. I would highly suggest doing your research and check out the other options that are out there.
Quite busy but enjoyable family breakfast. Was quieter after 10am.
I studies Motion Design here in the Graphic Arts course and we had like two good tutors and literally everything else sucked. I asked at the WSA library for the motion design section and the librarian asked me WHAT MOTION DESIGN WAS. The majority of staff have no idea how to advice motion design students and don't listen to the advice of tutors who are motions designers. It's bananas. I literally was having critiques with staff who either never had or hadn't opened AFter Effects in 15 years, never mind anything 3D. Motion design is great, but there was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better places to learn it than here. Youtube is free and it was at least half of my learning so just do that lol.
I urge anyone with any ambition not to attend this school. It's seeminly just a money-making institution. When I attended I was told you could take motion graphics, I was strung along and made to do illustration for first year. After that I was told that they weren't going to give us a teacher for motion graphics and we'd have to teach ourselves and hand it in at the end. It would be more worth your while watching tutorial videos online than paying £9000 a year to take this course.
One of those rare occasions you know you'll never forget. So much talent and enthusiasm coupled with a very warm welcome. I love that they reach out to locals and showcase what they do.
