Winchester Cathedral
"Winchester Cathedral is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. It is located at the heart of historic Winchester, once the seat of Anglo-Saxon and Norman royal power, on the site of an early Christian Church. Today, Winchester Cathedral stands beautifully in the idyllic green spaces surrounding it, boasting the title of Europe’s longest medieval Cathedral. The Old Minster, a Benedictine monastery, was the home of St Swithun and the present Cathedral was built on the orders of William the Conqueror. Begun in 1079, Winchester Cathedral has been a place of welcome and worship ever since. Please check the official Winchester Cathedral website for accurate opening times as well as closure notices before visiting."

A Wonderful Visit to Winchester Cathedral Winchester Cathedral is a stunning and well-maintained historic site. The general admission ticket was about £13.50 excluding the guided tour, which I found to be excellent value for the experience. The cathedral is incredibly well-preserved, with knowledgeable staff and volunteers available to answer questions about its rich history and architecture. The opening times are convenient, but it’s best to check ahead as they may vary depending on events or services. During my visit, I took so many breathtaking photos—it’s truly a photographer’s dream. The beauty of the cathedral, both inside and out, is remarkable. I highly recommend a visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere.
Absolutely stunning place to visit, seeped in history. No matter whether you're religious or not, the history makes it feel so special. We didn't do the tour this time because it was £17.50 each, and we were on a tight budget and wanting to spend our money on a nice meal, but even without it, the experience was amazing and the staff are more than willing to answer any questions.
First of all I must say that this has been probably the most beautiful cathedral I have ever been to. But I must say that I think that it's ridiculous to pay for an entree to a house of the Lord. But anyways, beside the entrance fee that's not low you get such a beautiful cathedral with multiple hallways, a crypt, a museum and some of the most beautiful windows I have ever seen. You will be surely impressed, no matter if you like sacral buildings or not. I think it is cheaper if you buy tickets in advance, but you can easily buy it there as well when you enter the cathedral. A free tour is included in the price if you like to get to know more about the cathedral of Winchester.
I had a very interesting tour of the cathedral, which is included in the price of entry. I also paid extra for the tower tour. Oh my! Over 200 steps up a winding and narrow spiral staircase, so wear sensible shoes and don't carry a big bag! This was very informative, and the views were stunningVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
I spent some time sitting outside of the Winchester Cathedral, just looking at that beautiful building. Later that day, I attended the Evensong in the early evening. It was very peaceful to be in that beautiful building, listening to the gorgeous music from the organ and the incredible choir. Whether you go inside or just take in the building from the outdoors, Winchester Cathedral is well worth a visit.
Simply one of the most stunning cathedrals in the world. The tower tour is fantastic and the views up top are incredible. Our guides were so knowledgeable and answered all our questions. If you can handle narrow stairs and heights book the tower tour!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
We had a half day trip to Winchester and after visiting the cathedral we wished we had been there much longer. The building is stunning and the exhibition area is fantastic with knowledgeable friendly staff on hand to share their expertise. No entrance fee is charged and there is no pressure to pay voluntarily either we were happy to leave a donation for such a great experience.
Large and fascinating cathedral. We went on the Tower Tour and a tour of the close. The volunteer guides were outstandingly good. Be warned that the Tower Tour, though excellent, does involve climbing steep and narrow steps: not for the claustrophobic!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
I visited Winchester Cathedral on a whim and was so happy I did. I was there the day before they had university graduation ceremonies, and so was thankful they were still allowing visitors while people were setting up computers and lighting for the event. Despite all the work happening, it was minimally distracting to what Winchester Cathedral had to offer, such as the many tombs and Mortuary Chests that were still easy to access. I'm happy to have been able to visit, even with the minimal restrictions while they prepared for their event. Beautiful place of worship!
Superb tour of an interesting site. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and welcoming, which made it a joy. We had lunch within the cafe and the chicken salad was very good. Fresh, quality ingredients at a fair price, in a lovely setting. I recommend a visit!
