I stayed there one night at the end of June 2017. The room that I got was quite noisy. I had workers just in front of my window since the place is under construction. This was not advertised on the page. Refurbishment works started 1st of January as indicated on a note on the kitchen door... I think it would be fair just to mention it to guests before booking. I don't mind sharing the bathroom for one day, but I guess that the minimum requirements are cleanliness and hot water. Unfortunately that was not what I found. The bathroom is old and barely clean. Maybe I was unlucky with the other guests, but the toilet flushing was not working very well... Probably that didn't help.... Moreover I had to shower with cold water on the check out day. The water heater was not working ( after a while the warm water was flowing from the tap a red light started blinking for "flame failure"). I mentioned it to the staff asking for a partial refund for the inconvenience but he told me that he had to speak to the manager and they will contact me about that. After 7 days I haven't heard anything from them. Some days ago I also wrote an email to them, but still no reply. There's a fridge in the room, that's good, but no hair dryer. Small thing but surely helpful especially if one had to shower with cold water.

The Widegate hostel is the worst place I've ever stayed. The reception is lovely and you feel like its part of a nice place. But when they take you next door you enter a house that is falling down around you. Walls falling apart, staircases dangerous, doors are faulty and locks hardly work. The shower and toilet facilities were dreadful. Really unhygienic and because it was shared it was always dirty/left in a state. To top it off the only toilet for 4 rooms wasn't 'allowed' to be flushed because it may clog up the drains. You literally couldn't go to the toilet. The room it self was dirty, had human hair all over the place and it was just filthy. Nothing felt clean and honestly going back I wouldnt stay there even if I was paid or it was free. Do not, I repeat do not stay at this hostel. You'd be better off on the street.

Not worth it for the price, when I arrived there, the "red door" advertised was locked and apparently they were under construction, and no one was there... after a while (had to ask people on the streets and businesses to figure it out) I discovered that it was another hidden door... I was shocked when I arrived, i expected something a bit better... shower was separated from the toilet and they both were a community shower/toilet, very deteriorated place overall, stained carpets and walls falling apart. Cleaning ladies were very nice and welcoming, very close to Liverpool St. Station, but the rest was a mess.

Everything was nice and in place. Location is great. Just seems a little run down. If you're looking for something fancy this isn't the place for you but it's affordable and the price is fair.
