the queues can be ridiculous at times, and the management wont let you buy earlier than when the session starts so you often miss 10-20 minutes of the session queuing. the ice itself can be good but often isnt redone between sessions and is therefore damaged and hard to skate on. the rentals are in a poor condition and need updating. given all this, its rather poor quality for how expensive it is. the lack of season passes is also a significant issue for frequent users.
Brought my 14 and 13 year old daughters for the Sunday morning session and they had fun, hence my 2 stars. However; I’m a skater and have been for over 40 years, and I couldn’t skate safely using the rented skates! I have my own hockey skates, but hockey skates are not allowed in the Sunday morning session. The rented skates were completely blunt, and when I pointed it out, I was told it is for health and safety reasons. I didn’t feel safe on the blunt skates so sat out the session. As you may expect, refreshments are overly priced and the place is in DESPERATE NEED of renovation. Had I felt happy to skate I could have overlooked that fact, but there’s no excuse. There were plenty of skaters, so the money is coming in. Please spend some of it in making it a nicer place to be.
I haven't even stepped foot into the actual ice rink and I've already been made to walk back to the Morrisons to take out cash because the debit minimum is £10... skating is £9 with own skates. I understand bank charges are high but that's an absolute farce. My feet are dead before I even touch the ice. Billingham already trumping Whitley in one way, neverminding the ice hockey. Update: the ice literally slumps down around the edge the entire way and has soft brown patches. Yeah: not good.
My daughter comes every Saturday for ice skating lessons. She does the group on a morning and then ice skating with a private coach throughout the 10-12 session. Couldn't fault the place.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I only attend for the ice hockey and not used to skate myself. The building has been there since I was a kid and used to skate there, nothing has changed in 30yr, it's probably in a state of disrepair But that being said the staff are great, the hockey team are good to watch and the people that go seem great, look forward to visiting for many years to come.
Lovely ice rink! It is an absolute pleasure going to Whitley Bay Ice Rink but the ice skates that they provide isn't the best for taking lessons. Could do with a revamp, it's still the same as it was 20 or more years ago! Apart from the damp, dingy building, the ice does the job it needs to. The hire boots could be replaced too. Kids enjoyed so suppose that's the main thing!
Recently started going back here to take the granddaughter, it has its popular times and its quieter sessions. I don't think it's changed very much from when I used to go, a loonngg time ago.
