Stayed in White gate cottage in July 2023. The cottage looks to be in a great location. But the main road is within feet from the front of the house and it's is very, very busy with cars and HGVs almost 24/7, the traffic was so heavy I had to disable the car alarm because the vibrations from the HGV would set it off. The house itself was in terrible a condition. Black mold, damp, slug trails on the carpet in the morning, electricity tripping with minimal use. The lane at the side of the house is used by children riding quads recklessly. I spoke with the lettung agent and he spoke with people hiring the house. He said they accepted that the house was in need of major renovation. I asked him if it was in the need such work why was it still be hired out? He said he would speak with them to see if there was anything that could be done regards the concern we had. He was to get back to us. It's now November and nothing.
Damp mould on living room wall needs sorting out. Two of us are asthmatics this didn't help. House was so cold on arrival. Beds not very comfortable. Had to buy a 60 watt bulb as the one that was in the kitchen was so dim. Second morning there was awoken at 7am by 3 men which looked like farmers arguing, and reving up a quad bike, and the sound of cattle banging about in a trailer..I gave 3 stars for the location, which is lovely. Sorry for review, but it wasn't a pleasant stay for us.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at White Gate Lodge. The place has bags of character and a lovely view of the Mournes. The patio and garden made a great place for a breakfast cuppa or an evening drink, and the lounge and bedrooms are cosy and comfortable. Philip was a very caring host - checking that we had settled in well and even sending my son's cuddly toy back through the post! Newcastle and Castlewellan are both nearby, providing good shopping and plenty of activity for the family.
Excellent cottage. Very authentic. Thoughtfully decorated/furnished. Great location. Lovely private gardens. We really enjoyed our short stay.
I have had the pleasure of staying here a couple of times. It is sheer relaxation beautiful scenery and the cottage is clean welcoming and a wee get a way from it all haven. Phillip is a welcoming host and helpful with advice. Look forward to our next visit.
The location was great but the house needs a lot TLC
Perfect family accommodation
