Whitby Museum is run by the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society. The building also houses the Society's Library and Archive. For more information please visit the Society's web site at http://www.whitbymuseum.org.uk/

Story

The Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society was established in 1823 and has around 800 members. It is one of the very few remaining Literary & Philosophical Societies that still runs an independent Museum, the older parts of which are often regarded as a 'Museum within a Museum' and have the atmosphere of an Edwardian Museum. The extension, opened in 2005, offers a costume gallery, temporary exhibition room and a lecture (Normanby) room.

I recently visited the museum and was thoroughly impressed. I myself don't know much about the local history or shipping/fishing, however i don't think that's necessary as it was still very interesting. Staff were friendly and really knew about the exhibits. I'd definitely recommend vising if you have a spare hour!

Me and the kids went on a Monday when they were off school in February 2018 the museum is closed on a Monday but the swing park adjacent to it which looks quite new was good for the little ones I should have looked on Google before I went then ended up down in the arcades all in all good day out got the x93 back to Middlesbrough double decker if you are interested comes every half an hour takes just over 1 hour to get back to Middlesbrough

Wonderful museum. Crammed full of interesting artifacts, fossils, taxidermy...the list goes on. Something for everyone. Adult admission on 5 pounds, kids free. Fantastic way to spend a couple of hours away from the crowds. Highly recommended.

Delightful little museum. A good mix of exhibits. Well worth a visit.

Amazing amount of items crammed in to the museum. Look out for the hand, and the fantastic display of hand made ships. The staff are friendly and will talk for hours about the contents. It's the sort of place you need to go to more than once to see everthing.
