Whitby Museum is run by the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society. The building also houses the Society's Library and Archive. For more information please visit the Society's web site at http://www.whitbymuseum.org.uk/

Story

The Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society was established in 1823 and has around 800 members. It is one of the very few remaining Literary & Philosophical Societies that still runs an independent Museum, the older parts of which are often regarded as a 'Museum within a Museum' and have the atmosphere of an Edwardian Museum. The extension, opened in 2005, offers a costume gallery, temporary exhibition room and a lecture (Normanby) room.

Great local museum. Absolutely stuffed to the brim with displays and objects, it is almost overwhelming. Some slightly questionable exhibits which could do with new interpretation, but generally a real treasure trove. Ticket allows for annual entry.
£8 for a basic museum experience. My opinion may be slightly tainted coming from Manchester and going to MOSI for free my entire life, but £8 feels a little steep for what is essentially low maintenance cabinets of donated items. The gift shop is also to be avoided if you value your bank balance.
Ok, it's not a fortune, but even with all the inflation in 2024, a local museum with static objects run by council shouldn't be £10 to enter. In Liverpool all the museums are free. None in Whitby are.
Might only be small but it is packed full of local history.From fossils to ships.Well worth a visit even just to see the “Hand of Glory”.
Amazing collections, especially of fossils and carved jet. Couldn't believe how many huge marine reptile fossils there were. Staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable. I feel lucky to have visited.
