Lovely heritage site. Enjoyed the free audio tour at all the little spots, lots to listen to and enjoy as you wander around. For good photos, try to go early, I was one of the first in and it was very reverent. Quickly filled up by the time I left at 12pm. Museum does tend to go over same topics do no worries if you don't have the audio. Could do with more seats, particularly on a lovely day.
One of the best places bearing witnesses to the English history and heritage. Entrance ticket is around £12 per person. But it is worth every penny. Ample parking and parking is free of charge during winter till 1st of March. There is a museum, tea room and a souvenir shop which could be accessed by the same entrance fee. You could easily spend the full day here. Whitby town is also a nice little town for a walk, shopping or even site seeing. Fish and chips in Whitby are amazing.
Great place to discover the history of not only the Abbey but of the historical figures who been here through out the ages including fictional figure Dracula. There is a great museum and gift shop and we were fortunate to arrive in time to view a display of hunting birds. Well worth a visit.
Would recommend a visit. Great piece of history and you able to get up close. Quite an exposed area so might want to wrap up warm and in waterproofs if the weather isn't good. Nice gift shop as well. Car park was free out of season as well which was a nice surprise!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
What a fabulous place with full of history! You have to walk up the 199 steps or the donkey path and walk by St Mary’s Church to get to the entrance of the abbey. Totally worth the entrance fee to walk through the ground. It is breathtaking. Just outside the abbey wall is a footpath along the cliff. It’s an easy trail and it will take you all the way to Robin Hood’s Bay, 7 miles one way. We hiked a mile and saw fabulous cliff views.
Fantastic visit to Whitby Abbey. We visited on Easter Monday and in addition to the Abbey and museum, there were lots of interactive activities for the family to get involved in. The view from the grounds are great, with views overlooking the harbour and town. The 199 steps to and from the abbey to the town take you past St Mary's Church, which is also worth a visit. We spent 4 hours here and could easily have spent longer, with all the activities on, but would probably allow for a couple of hours or so on a standard day.
The ruins of what would have been a beautiful building and also some inspiration to Bram Stoker for the incarnation of his most famous novel, really is a must see if you are in the area. Lovely grounds with a fantastic little museum at the end.
Unexpected delight! Much grander than expected, showing just how magnificent this Abbey would have been in its heyday. There is also an interesting museum which sadly I didn’t have time to visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Love the Abbey with it's atmospheric arches and quirky history. Beware though, the car park is not English Heritageand there are no signs to say as we found out to our cost! We wrongly thought, belonging to EH that parking was free, but we got a parking fine and EH didn't care!
Beautiful old Abbey we was lucky to capture against a glorious sunset. You can drive up to the top and sit in the car park but have to pay to enter the abbey in daytime.... Great views over Whitby from up there too.
