Definitely worth a visit for anyone with an interest in historical buildings or architecture. The walk around the area is beautiful and getting to visit the priory is well worth a look. The staircases are well lit and safe for most people as long as you hold the hand rail. The old fireplace area must have been grand in its day. The views from the windows are beautiful. For safety reasons the roof area is not accessible. There are signs with information about the rooms and history about the priory.
Great place to visit. Beautifully kept gatehouse from the 14th century Run and owned by English heritage, it is free to enter.
I loved this BUT there is SO MUCH MORE TO SEE IF YOU ARE VISITING HERE... If you park at the train station Wetheral and walk down 99 steps besides the viaduct turn right at the bottom and follow the path right around to the Gatehouse. From the Gatehouse keep walking for maybe 5 mins then you'll find a metal swing gate leading onto a grassy path. Take the path into the ancient woods for a real treat and stunning views of the River Eden. Also along this path way on the river bank is MONKS CAVES /ST CONSTANTINES CELLS which are absolutely unreal to visit and the scenery on the way back along the river looking across is beyond words. Unfortunately you cannot visit that tho as its on private land. But still a circular trip like this one is really REALLY good. Don't forget to cross the viaduct for spectacular views of the river Eden.
Worth a look even if it is just the gatehouse, the side door takes you up the spiral staircase to the upper floors , has a few small side rooms and there are information boards giving you an insight in to the history .
Not much to do here but it filled in some time on our way to Carlisle and was a nice distraction for an hour looking down by the river Eden and at the nearby church.
Lovely price of history worth a visit if nearby.
A nice little surprise remaining gatehouse of An Abby at Wetheral with great views across the river Eden... And interpretation boards as well
Nice structure, love the colour of the bricks. Couldn’t really do much there, but it was nice to see.
Free to enter. Mint condition. If you are around go and visit it, as it is very interesting building and it is well preserved, with cool spiral staircase leading to upper floor.
It is absolutely amazing place to visit and this gatehouse is in a place called Wetheral off the m6 at junction 42 the b6263. And a couple of minutes up the A69 is Carlisle and Hadrian's wall and old roman wall
