This was my first visit and I cannot fault the experience. The tutor was excellent, really knew her subject and had an easy and approachable teaching style. I learnt lots and fell confident now to have a go on my own. I met some lovely people. The accommodation was perfect, the grounds amazing and the meals - WOW - lots of choice with an innovative menu. There wasn’t anything I didn’t enjoy. The staff were friendly and approachable, I will definitely be booking again Thank you
My first time at West Dean was a wonderful experience! The beautiful house and gardens, the excellent tuition, the welcoming and inspiring feel of the place made me a very happy person and i shall return!!!! Rooms: Very comfortable and beautifullly furnished with stunning views to the front of the house. Food & drinks: Very good and varied meals. Excellent standard! Compliments to the chef….
I am disappointed to have to to give an average review having been going to West Dean at various times for 30 years. The courses and tuition are excellent, but the accomodation, in particular the food, is declining. Some of the dishes on offer were frankly inedible due to poor preparation, and the fare monotonous - sometimes recycled from the day before.
I love going to West Dean College. There is a wonderful atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. The building is full of interesting learning spaces; art studios, big airy rooms and lovely spaces to sit and relax. The food is delicious and the whole place feels a relaxed learning place.Rooms: 5/5
Excellent residential course "intermedial throwing" with Jo Davies. This is a great course for those who have started with the basics of throwing but would like to refine their technique. To give context I have been mucking around with clay for 30+ years and found this course very useful. I was slightly worried I would burn out as it was an evening intro, two 12 hour days and then a half day wrap up. However, the course was well structured and with realistic blocks of work to be achieved in each part of the day. And the day is broken up with three excellent meals and two snack breaks with biscuits. The meals were well above my expectations. Pescatarians, Vegetarians and Vegans are well catered for. I have food sensitivities and found the home cooked food very very kind on my digestion. This really bolstered my energy as I didn't have to worry about not eating enough or getting an upset tummy. Which meant I could sustain the 12 hour days. The room I stayed in was a basic level room and met my "premier inn" standards perfectly. It was well appointed. My only complaint was that I needed more pillows. I bought my own FLUFFY PILLOW, and to West Dean's credit they were quick to provide addition pillows to a fellow course attendee. Apparently the grounds are fantastic. My course was all consuming so I didn't get to appreciate all the added extras. And in this respect I would arrive to the course early or stay another evening as everyone said how delightful it was. Absolutely I will attend again and would happily recommend West Dean to refined midweek travellers looking to experience life in a country pile.
I can only recommend the History of Pattern, with Hands-on Pattern Making course at West Dean College. Great teacher, excellent course content, and beautiful surroundings. Not to mention the lovely snacks and meals!Rooms: 5/5
I recently attended a 4 day Furniture making course at West Dean College where in addition to learning a great deal about many carpentry skills we also made a Dovetail jointed box. The course was excellent and very useful indeed, not particularly because of making the box itself but because of all the other things that were taught. The tutor, Daniel Pateman was excellent and we were lucky to have him. And, what a beautiful place, a really good and peaceful place to learn.
I attended a ceramics course recently. The staff, accommodation, teaching and food were all 5*. It is obvious that there is a lot of attention to planning for each and every course. Nothing was missed out. The gardens are just beautiful even in February and a super add on to attending a course. I look forward to coming back.Rooms: 5/5
The short portrait sculpture course run by Ian Edwards was amazing. What a treat to learn from such a talent. The accommodation, food, grounds were all fabulous.Rooms: 5/5
This is a fantastic venue in beautiful surroundings! Both the course "Mark-making in woven tapestry – textural techniques" and the Tutor, Rachel Johnston, were excellent. The food was very good and the staff were helpful and professional. It was easy to get to on public transport number 60 bus from Chichester, even on a Sunday, when buses are hourly. Rooms: I had a "student room" away from the main house. It was spacious and quiet and although my course was on the far side of the campus, walking there took me less than ten minutes. The bed was a little high, but the matress was firm. Food & drinks: Very good food, using their own produce from the gardens, with options for vegetarians and vegans they do try to accommodate people with other dietry needs. Sometimes we had to wait for more dishes to be prepared, as demand had outstripped supply!
