Interesting and very large earthen fort, perhaps half a mile outside Warham. Very limited parking, we only just managed to park our small car without blocking any entrances. Windswept and expect to find sheep grazing over the site. Excavation evidence shows both iron age and roman occupation.
A great example of an iron age fort 800bc -42ad. Difficult to find but take the road opposite the pub. Go over hump back bridge up the rise and park 9n the left bank. Access is via a farm track on the right.
This 2200 year old Iron Age hillfort is worth a visit without a doubt. Your first thought is that it looks like an old motte & bailey but it predates those by a thousand years… If the gate in the field to the left of the entrance is open i’d dump your car there as the approach road is thin and has no obvious spaces to park. The site has commanding views across the landscape and is in excellent condition considering its construction in 200BC.
Warham Iron Age Fort, ancient earthworks Constructed by the Iceni Tribe. Possible range of functions including ceremonial meeting place, market and trade, place of safety if raided by hostile tribes. Very likely that Boudica walked here. It was repurposed by the Romans. The outer inclines would have been white due to the chalk beneath the soil.
Amazing to think this was built 2000 years ago. Obviously imagination has to be used but marvel at the skill of these Iron Age people constructing this with nothing more than hand tools. No on or near site parking. Be prepared to walk. No disabled access either.
Not easy to drive to, but undoubtedly the best preserved iron age hill fort I've seen. The visible remnants the giant, hand-cut banks in the chalky ground are surprisingly inspiring. The site could use more explanatory posters or boards.

Lived in North Norfolk all my life and never knew this Iron age site was here until now. Amazing bit of Norfolk heritage with no hype at all.
