It is a great place to visit and catch up with old friends and remember those who no longer are with us.
Lovely landmark. Beautifully kept and maintained. Well worth a visit.
Monument inscribed to the 12,000 from Leicester and environs who gave their lives in battle in almost 300 years.
Great monument of remembrance. Really nice views, well worth a visit. Lovely parade on remembrance day. Well maintained links really well to Victoria Park. Pay and display car park a short walk away.
Beautiful landmark, very well maintained. It really brings the park together, and adds a nice touch of history to such a youthful area.
"The Arch of Remembrance" was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was unveiled in 1925. It, like "The Cenotaph" in Whitehall in London which he also designed, is a Grade 1 nationally listed structure having been first listed in 1955 - 25 years before "The Cenotaph" - then upgraded to Grade 1 in 1996. "The Arch of Remembrance" has been described as "the most imposing of Lutyens's English war memorials". It is approximately 21m 69' 4.5" tall and is made of Portland Stone. The Arch has four piers or legs on which there are within four painted stone flags - The Union Flag representing The Army, The White Ensign representing The Royal Navy, The Royal Air Force Ensign representing The Royal Air Force and The Red Ensign representing The Merchant Navy. Sir Edwin Lutyens also designed the Park Lodges and the Park Gates in Victoria Park on the approaches to "The Arch of Remembrance" from Granville Road and University Road. Whenever I come here I feel so humbled by the sacrifice of so many people who gave their lives for this Country so we could live our lives as we wish to and in peace.
