It's strange, because the cafe smells amazing when you walk in, but the food we had was just a bit bland. The pho stock was lacking in body and oomph, and there was no mint or fresh chilli on the side, which I'd normally expect with the bean sprouts and lime. The summer rolls were really rather disappointing too. The dipping sauce was good, but the actual noodles and veg inside were without any herbs, spices or even salt as far as we could detect. To be honest, for a basic street food cafe, it was a bit expensive as well. They do have a small but good Vietnamese store attached, and that's worth a visit if you cook at home :-
Ordered a bowl of hot and spicy noodle soup this evening. It was spot on! The beef was tender and soft and the soup was rich and sweet. The waiter that served me was so far the most polite and funniest person I've met. Will come back for more food.
AVOID AT ALL COST!!!! Worst pho I’ve had by far. The soup was literally some salt and msg. It was clear and did not have any taste, maybe it was the water used to cook the noodles in? Provided with iceberg lettuce instead of Thai basil leaves. Beef had a funny rubber taste to it. Noodles was still hard and solid when bitten. Extremely overpriced for the quality provided. Pho in Central London is better and cheaper than this. Was going to try banh mi on menu too. But after the pho not even going to try.
Small place, great for a quick bite to eat, plenty of choices for meat eaters and vegans! I had the BBQ pork bowl while my pal had the vegan beef pho both were delicious
Newcastle as a whole is full of places to eat. Being here on an externally short visit, I got to try one. Vietnamese had never been high on my list of food to try, mainly because where I live it's not available. So upon seeing a Vietnamese food outlet, I thought. Why not. And why not indeed, I went with the chef's recommendation chicken pho, and I asked for non spicy I have a meeting to attend , I got a large refreshing bowl, of succulent chicken and soft noodles, with masses of coriander, I love that. Eat the lot ! Very tasty, and certainly worth a visit, had I been here longer, l may of tried it a little spicier, but I went away full and happy.. give it ago, you might like it.
Absolutely delicious food with a great vegan menu, maybe 15 or 20 dishes which is an unusual amount of variety for vegans eating out. Everything tastes really fresh and it's great to have the different types of mock meat. I believe the vegan "chicken" is tofu based and the other vegan meats are seitan based. The service is friendly and quick enough even when it's busy. The seating area is small and casual, it's great for a quick lunch or tea with friends. There's also a little shop adjacent with some Vietnamese food and ingredients.
Decent like the previous comment but that's all! I've been travelling around south East Asia so I know about that kind of stuff. The speciality supposed to be the "Phô" a white noodle soup. I've been eating that for 40 years! All ingredients seems really fresh that's why they gets 2 stars but the broth, main element in this dish is completely insipid, no flavour at all! Second dish was the fry spring rolls... Some taste but full of water! Water in a fry spring roll? This only because it's been frozen and reheat/fry. Plus the rice paper which is use to roll wasn't cooked enough inside. A bit disappointing but will go back to try the Ban mi which is a Vietnamese sandwich. Let's them an other chance
My husband and I were expecting great things with this place. We had been recommended it as a restaurant that had good Vietnamese food. And I love Vietnamese food having master pho at home and have learnt how to make summer rolls. I'm no pro chef but I know how to read recipes and follow instructions from my friends mom's, who were from Vietnam. When we arrived we noticed it was cute. A small cafe with a store in the back. The place was presented clean and tidy. The server was polite and greeted us kindly. This unfortunately that was were my story of happiness ends... When I looked at the menu I was pleasently happy to see pho and banh mi. I wanted to get one. When I asked for the banh mi they told me that they didn't have any rolls made and that it would take 5 to 10minutes to bake plus cooling time. He then advised me to get the bbq pork rice bowl instead as it was kinda the same.. But I know what a banh mi sandwich has in it. I would miss out on the yummy pate.. The deli type meats and the mix of yummy herbs.. Then I attempted to ask for the summer rolls.. But sadly they were out of those as well. Now I want to give the benefit of the doubt that it was 430pm.. Late and they had run out.. We were sat down at our table. The service was fast and he was very polite when he brought the food. The service here was amazing. And I think its rare that staff are as kind as this man was.. I'm not doubting that. When my food arrived it was what I expected.. A rice bowl with meat.. Pickled dikon and carrot and one lettuce leaf. I ate my food... But the meat had a stringy texture and tasted off.. I finished my bowl.. But felt sick afterwards. My husband couldn't finish his. Then suddenly I noticed that the server brought out some fresh summer rolls to the table behind us.. Weren't they out? He then asked me very politely if I wanted some. As he had looked and just noticed there was so made... So you couldn't look when I asked before. Or was it because you saw the big white kid and thought I would just lie and say we didn't have any so you didn't have to look.. I don't want to pull the race card because that's stupid.. But I do want to say.. Maybe you should have waited till we left before you pulled them out.. I left feeling really sick. I dry heaved all the way to the train station. When I finally puked. I hadn't eaten anything that day that would have caused me to be ill as all I tasted and all that came up was my meal. Maybe it's better during the day.. And not the evening. I am reluctant to go back because I had food poisoning.. But I'm not a doctor.. I just got sick right after being there. I had high hopes for this place.. I havent been able to find a good authentic Vietnamese place.. And going to PHO the chain gets boring after a while. I probably won't go back.. And I will probably get a message from the owner saying.. I could have swapped it out for something else.. But as I have just stated.. All the food I wanted was out.. And this was my third choice.
Right. I never write a nasty review, unless it's unbearable, in this case a very rude behaviour of I believe a Vietnamese guy. But the sad thing is, I don't know if he's working there or not. Saw him in & out service area, and sitting in front of the shop alley, which not a wide area. Some of the food sold in their mini market, lots are only written in Vietnamese characters. As he sat there, I asked him, what is said on the package. I know he spoke Vietnamese language with the rest, so my guess was he could read Vietnamese characters. He looked at me with his unkind face & said he doesn't know, and told me to ask others, arrogantly & rude. After that he just back looking at his mobile phone. Definitely minus 5 stars for him! But thanks for the kindness, OK service of other Vietnamese there & the food isn't too bad.. So 2 stars.
I witnessed my vegetarian spring rolls being cut in half with scissors. I presumed it was a presentation thing...only to hear them in the fat fryer. They tasted of grease, the contents were lost, had no crunch and were vile. I never knew you could get a spring roll so wrong.
