Vaisakhi Mela at Victoria Park, SmethwicknYesterday, our family had the immense blessing of attending the Vaisakhi Mela at Victoria Park, Smethwick — and what a spiritually uplifting experience it was. This was our first ever visit to such a religious festival as a family, and it left us deeply moved and inspired.nnThe highlight of the day was undoubtedly the divine darshan of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, placed with full reverence under a beautifully adorned canopy, echoing the grace and aura of the Golden Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. The park was transformed into a sacred space, with the continuous recitation of Gurbani filling the air. It genuinely felt like a slice of Harmandir Sahib had been brought to Birmingham — the stillness, the serenity, and the unshakeable presence of Guru Maharaj Ji was something words can hardly do justice to.nn Seeing families of all backgrounds bowing their heads, children learning how to matha tekh bow with respect, and sevadars maintaining discipline and devotion – it reminded us of the rich spiritual and cultural heritage that Vaisakhi represents.nnBeyond the spiritual, the Gatka performances were powerful and captivating – a reminder of our martial tradition and valor. The weightlifting competitions, funfair rides, and children’s activities added joy and energy, making it a day that truly brought generations together.nnHowever, the only dampener was the commercialisation of food stalls. Vaisakhi is meant to be a day of seva and sharing, yet almost every food and dessert stall was charging premium prices – even for simple kulfis or ice creams. It’s disheartening when a religious festival becomes an opportunity for profit-making, especially when Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings emphasis humility, fairness, and service.nnRecommendation: For food, we’d suggest stepping outside the park – there are plenty of local restaurants along the street that serve more authentic and affordable meals with the same warmth.nnHighly Recommended: Attend for Guru Maharaj Ji’s darshan, the kirtan, the Gatka, and the sense of community spirit – these are not to be missed. It’s a chance to reconnect with Sikhi, especially for younger generations.nnMay Guru Sahib bless all sevadars who made the event happen – your efforts brought the spirit of Vaisakhi to life in the heart of Birmingham.nnWaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
They was a lot of animals around . Its a open park which allowed you to walk around with your friends. You can also feed the ducks and the swans in the park .
It's quite a wide open space with lots of lovely trees. Squirrels frequent there quite often and the flowers are beautiful. Could be good for a picnic when the world returns to normal or even just a destination for a daily walk. It's also a lovely spot for photography whether it be nature pictures you want or of yourself/others
This is a beautiful park for family and everyone! There is a pond where you can sit at benches to watch the ducks swim. The park Hub and academy is nearby as well where you can rent bikes as a family to ride. There are different playgrounds for both young children and adults. There is also a free gym exercise area as well.nThe park is also big enough for a family picnic as you can sit anywhere and enjoy the sun! Street parking is available the other side of the park and also a small side by outside the park gates on the High Street. This park is a great asset to the community and especially for children to come and release tension.
Still as pleasant to have a walk round with plenty of benches to sit on and watch the world go by or watch the many, many squirrels that live in the park. They are incredibly nosy and will get very close to you expecting some food. I nearly always forget to carry some in my bag for them.nUnfortunately the good weather and food being left in the picnic areas has seen a increase in rats, which I am terrified of, so walking in certain parts I have to be aware of them.nThere is a excellent children's playground at the High Street entrance of the park, by the small car park and lodge, which has been converted into a interesting local history museum. On street parking is available the other side of the park and also a small lay by outside the park gates on the High Street.nThere is a good local bus service with the 87 and 89 buses stopping directly outside the park and the 80 stopping not far from the other side of the park.nIt's great for dog walkers as you can take your time and walk round the paths, or when matches are not being played, exercise your dog on the pitches. There is also a lot of outdoor gym equipment scattered throughout the park and a area also set up for exercise that is extremely well used.nThe park is a great asset to the community and events are held there throughout the year, but it's really just nice to sit and relax in a busy town.nBolly of course loves it!
