Story

Although in the 1830s a small natural history museum existed at the rooms of the Literary and Scientific Society at the Pantiles, the present Museum traces its foundation back to the summer of 1885 when Dr George Abbott began to arrange displays in the Society's entrance lobby. His enthusiasm led to the formation of the Natural History and Philosophical Society and the beginning of their natural history and antiquarian museum.

In 1897 the Borough Council adopted the 1891 Museums and Gymnasiums Act, and later the authority assumed responsibility for the Society's collections. Although building of the town's new Civic Centre began in the 1930s, the Second World War delayed plans to relocate to the purpose-built Library and Museum building. In 1954 the museum moved into its new home which it has occupied ever since.

The Museum has permanent displays of Tunbridge ware; Local history; Archaeology; Toys; and local Natural history. The Art Gallery hosts a number of exhibitions throughout the year. The Museum also runs a number of activities for all ages throughout the year, including our ever-popular Holiday Happenings and Mini Beast Safaris, as well as our Winter evening talks series and Art strolls.

With regular and diverse exhibitions, carefully displayed local history and friendly staff, The museum is a must visit in the town. Kids will love it. There is plenty for them to see and do. As a Tunbridge Wells local, I regularly visit to see the new exhibitions and revisit my favourite pieces of Our towns history.

Great little museum with super friendly staff! I've got a zealous 3 old boy who was, making his voice heard, when I apologised too the staff member she said 'don't worry its a museum not a library!'...she then pointed out the brilliant interactive exhibits. Thank you

A bit nonplussed to be honest! I don't think the website's boasts of having an art gallery are doing it any favours. A room with a couple of dolls houses and 2 (nonfunctional, doesn't anyone take pride in presentation these days?) torches doesn't do it for me. We thought we had come to the wrong floor and asked the museum lady but she confirmed thats all there was. There are some nice works of art within the museum across the landing but in all not, I think, enough to justify its claim to be an art gallery
