Pleasant way to spend an hour or two if the weather is accomodating. Great view over the surrounding area once at the top. Lots of info on the historical importance of this site along the way.
There are lots of mounds like this throughout the country, but when you don't know anything about them, then they are just hills. Tullyhogue fort has information pannals along the path way from the free carpark no height restrictions that tells you about the O Neil's who lived and where crowned here. Good carpark and the paths are wide tarmac with non slip coating and although it goes uphill towards the mound, it is still suitable for wheelchairs and prams, There are several picnic tables and litter bins. No Toilets but it's only about 3 mile or so from Cookstown Asda and Tesco stores where Toilets are available.
Brilliant place steeped in history . Theres a walk up to the top were you can read the history of the O'Neill's. Battles and family.
This spectacular enclosure is classed as a fort. The Irish word 'Dún' simply means 'enclosure' but we have a tendency to see these old structures as defensive and military. Tullyhogue is very large and it is difficult to get a perspective of it from the ground. It would have been almost impossible to defend and is probably a village site or a ceremonial site more than a refuge. Historians tend to view the original inhabitants as a bunch of warring tribes - we have loads of their earrings but none of their weapons in our museums. People like to romanticise violence. At over thirty meters across, this was no fortress! Legend has it that the O'Neills were inaugurated here
It is a lovely peaceful place to walk with beautiful scenery
Go here quite often. A short stroll up and down and if the mood takes you and weather is fine stroll around the actual Fort. Loaded with history. Biggest problem especially if one has children and well behaved pets is the pooh that should be lifted but isn't. A few more bins on path to dump pooh bags in would be a plus for the caring owners unfortunately can't imagine the ones that don't bother using it which is annoying. Spoils the walk and the experience. Quite a few let the pets run free so far no problems during my visits however pets like humans could turn nasty. Also how can an owner lift pooh when they don't see their pets doing it.
Lovely spot with nice scenic views over Cookstown and surrounding countryside.
This was a magical mystical place full of wonder and great facts, on the way around the easy walk way from the car park past the high Kings chair and all the way up through the modern art display of chieftain clann members surrounding you with the eary feeling as you look around they are following you up over the brow of the hill to the quietness of the fort itself... It made you feel as you looked down on the panoramic view of Cookstown and surrounding areas and the beauty of the Sperrin Mountain range enclosing the fort and as far as the eye can see you feel in awe of what it was like to stand in the middle of the fort and get a shoe thrown over your head to make a pretty girl a royal princess...mighty stuff and well worth a visit. I think as tourist visiting our beautiful country they see much more of the beauty that is as they say on our doorstep and only when standing at the top looking down over the land that the King's of ulster minded for our generations and our youngsters coming behind do we respect and appreciate what is actually right here... Do take the time to check it out if you are in this area it's overwhelming.
I am one of the Hagan descendants. I've enjoyed learning about this site and my family's connection to it. I'm the tenth generation Hagan living in America. Thanks for sharing this with the world.
Beautiful peace place
