A newly refurbished building with an interesting back history. Display is informative and the tour with a very knowledgeable guide a must. The staff and volunteers provide a welcoming experience. Well worth a visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Enjoyed our afternoon at the mining museum at Skinningrove. Not been before as it has been closed for such a long time. The history etc is well set put and not overwhelming like some museums I've visited. Our guide Gary was friendly and very knowledgeable about the extensive mining works in the area. My only suggestion would be to have a coffee shop with snacks, as a drink would have been lovely after our visit. Prebooking might be advisable once the venue becomes more popular but we didn't pre-book on this occadion.
Pity we couldn't go down the mine because of flooding. A small reduction in tour cost could have been made in view of this.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Great place makes you appreciate modern living.....
Fabulous place for adults and children, lovely people working there mostly volunteers. Father Christmas always visits in December. He is down the mine and we all have to wear our hard hats to go and visit him. There are Christmas crafts for the children to do either after going to see him or while waiting their turn.
Good museum struggling due to a ceiling collapse when I visited; reduced admission valid for a year. New items under construction and knowledgable staff. Better for grown-ups than toddlers due to the length of the explainations - interesting as these were to adults.
A real experience as experienced miners take you through the museum and let you handle artefacts, guide you into a section of the mine and experience the darkness that miners and child miners experienced. Very sobering learning of the conditions they worked under. The passion, storytelling and knowledge of the guides is fantastic. Looking forward to seeing museum develop with lottery grant
Unfortunately not all the exhibits were open but the guide was very knowledgeable. Further improvements are planned with a new museum building being built so hopefully next time we visit it will be even better
We really enjoyed this museum; You are given a tour with a little theatrics thrown in to give you an idea of the conditions the miners worked in. Best to book ahead it's surprising how many people were there and no need to bring a hardhat as they have plenty
A wonderful experience. We just 60 couple visited Oct 2013. Gotta say the most magic aspect was that the volunteers were able to connect with the history of the mining with real anecdotes from their childhood but also from their ancestors who had worked in the mine. Life must have been tough. Such details bring the visit to life. Have a look at the 'accident record book' which is on display. Seems there were mishaps every day. Broken fingers, crushed feet and even a death. Thank you for an interesting visit.
