Tissington Hall

Story

Tissington Hall is an early 17th-century Jacobean mansion house in Tissington, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire. It is a Grade II* listed building. The FitzHerberts, descended from the Norman family of Norbury Hall, acquired Tissington by the marriage of Nicholas FitzHerbert (the second son of John FitzHerbert of Somersal Herbert) to Ciceley Frauncis, heiress of Tissington, in 1465.The old moated manor at Tissington was replaced with the new mansion in 1609 by Francis FitzHerbert and remains the home of the FitzHerbert family. The current occupant is Sir Richard Ranulph FitzHerbert Bart. Both Francis FitzHerbert and his son (Sir) John served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire, a post that circulated among the county families. It is the hall that makes Tissington Hall unusual. It is one of a small group of compact Derbyshire gentry houses in which a central hall runs through the house from front to back. Nicholas Cooper surmises that the unusual, progressive character may be due to the influence of lodges (he counted some fifty emparked estates in Saxton's map of the shire, of 1570) and the grand example of a through-hall at Hardwick. Behind a two-storey enclosed entrance porch (illustration, right), the hall is entered at the centre of one end. On the left are two parlours separated by a stairhall, on the right a kitchen and buttery. Corner towers on the garden front, now linked by the additional upper floor above the gallery range, provide further rooms.

Lovely little hamlet feels like time stood still. You can walk the Tissington trail, we chose not to as it was so hot and not a breath of air, so we went into the lovely café had a nice meal and then had a walk up the high street took some pics and then sat and had a delicious ice cream. If you do what we did it's about an hour but if you go on the trail it can take a lot longer. Tissington Hall is a privately owned house they do have tours but there was a private function so we couldn't go inside, which was a pity as I would have loved to have had a look around this would have made the visit longer. It really is a very pretty quaint place to visit. It's a lovely place whether you stop off before going onto Dovedale or Ilam country park or choose to walk the trail.
There's nothing more special than a wedding in the Derbyshire countryside, especially when at Tissington! I've been fortunate to capture some lovely weddings here and it's one of the most spectacular places to be, especially when the summer weather hits! I can't wait to return soon - Tom
This village is absolutely stunning and idyllic, the villagers very friendly and inviting. Lovely place to stroll around and take in the tranquillity and clean air. Step into one of their craft shops for gifts, candles, and other home made produce. The cafe serves a lovely range of affordable home cooked and carefully selected treats. Really enjoyed our very chilled out visit
My sister got married here at the weekend and it was the most special day! The staff went above and beyond, nothing was to much trouble. The venue is absolutely beautiful and great for photos. 5* in all areas
Visiting Tessington Hall was a charming experience, especially for history buffs. The house itself is cozy and unpretentious—do not expect grandiose architecture or opulent interiors. However, the real treasure lies in the stories shared by the knowledgeable guide. With tales spanning over centuries, you get a vivid picture of the family’s fortunes and the rich history embedded in the estate. The owner’s dedication to maintaining the property is clear, and knowing that your visit helps support its upkeep adds to the experience. A worthwhile stop for those who appreciate history over grandeur.
Visited for the first time on the Halls last open day of the year,to be greeting by Sir Richard, welcoming you in to his home. Our tour guide was the lovely Wendy, who was very knowledgable and friendly. The tour through the house and outside was just over an hour long,we thoroughly enjoyed it and a walk in the gardens after. Nice little village, very picturesque.
The Well dressing, which takes place in May for about a week annually is lovely. Amazing Wells decorated with mainly flowers. Very picturesque village tasty homemade cakes available and crafts. Enjoyable afternoon.
We had our wedding at Tissington Hall in July 2023. We absolutely loved the location and the wedding exceeded our expectations! The rose garden and grounds were absolutely beautiful, we had so many comments from our guests about how much they loved it. Cat and Gabby were fantastic at organising everything behind the scenes, from walking round the village to give the groomsmen their button hole flowers early in the morning, directing guests to be in the right place at the right time throughout the day and even making a bouquet for the bouquet toss in no time at all! Cat was brilliant at answering all of our emails in the lead up to our wedding, dealing with all of the suppliers and made the day run so smoothly. We also visited Tissington a couple of times in the year before our wedding and Cat was very kind to show us and our families around Tissington Hall. She was an absolutely exceptional wedding coordinator and the only regret is that we don’t have a reason to talk to her anymore! We couldn’t recommend a wedding at Tissington more highly!
I have been visiting Tissington for over 60 years and every visit is still different. Wonderful place to visit. If the halls not open there is plenty more to do. There are many the walks around Tissington Village, don't forget the Tissington Trail, Herbert's Tea Room a must for any visit . Lots of local people selling their produce. Edward and Vintage sweet shop. A visit during the Well Dressings is out of this world.
Gated property. Was not able to see inside. However it's huge stone palace in a little village. Beautiful surroundings. Good for relaxed small walks on a typical spring/summer day. There are small shops, coffee shops, homely b&b's around. Free public parking up to 2hrs. Old village with lots of stone houses and churches around. Quiet streets. Good for cycling as well. Great get away for a relaxed - do nothing weekend.
