I left my bag on the train when I got off at Thornaby. The ticket office rang Middlesbrough at once to get someone to take it off the train and I was able to collect it quickly. I really appreciate the quick actions of staff which meant I had a slight delay instead of a lost day.
No where to sit and it was raining. An hours wait in the rain. Rubbish. Avoid if you are able.
The best station if you want the south end of Stockton which lies a ten minute walk across the River Tees. Reasonable facility, but what you see today is a car park occupying what used to be the station building. Looking east toward Middlesbrough lies scrub land where up till the 1980s stood a motive power depot and an enormous shunting yard.
This station has a lot more frequent services than Stockton but you can be waiting quite a long time on the weekends. There is also a cafe, a ticket office and a place to sit inside if the weather is bad. The train station is accessible by bus and other forms of transport.
Had to change at Thornaby train station on our way from Whitby to York. We didn't fancy the 50 minute wait between connections in the station, so we asked Thomas, the ticket master, if he knew where there was a pub or an eaterie nearby, in which we could waste some time. He pointed us to 'The Dubliner', across the road from the station but only really accessible via the bridge, which had many steps. He noticed that we were laden down with suitcases, thus making the short journey awkward. He therefore, without us asking, offered to look after our luggage. What a bloody superstar he is! If every station had a 'Thomas', people would have more reason to praise the rail network than to slate it. Thank you Thomas. You are a gentleman and a credit to your company. I hope you get to see this review, because you made our brief wait much more bearable, and also gave us faith in a company that seems to be filled with rude, ignorant pigs. Send Thomas down to the Midlands and Southern Rail Networks please. They could do with a fair bit of training from him.
