Amazing place! It’s 500 years old and the atmosphere is stunning. Food was great and portions were enormous. Staff are friendly and did everything possible to help and make us feel special. Sure it will be one of my favourite restaurants in the future.
Friendly village pub that we came to primarily because they were showing the football. Good ales, great kids play area and nice menu. They did a kids scampi for our daughter which she loved. Fish pie was good with fresh veg and 2 king prawns. Homemade sticky toffee pudding too! A good find.
A gorgeous village pub, with fabulous food and service! The Pie & Chips was a nod back to the good old days, very hearty meal.. thanks guys, look forward to our next visit!!
Really cute pub and decorated lovely for Xmas. Food was a bit hit and miss probably miss. The burger and chips were quite standard but both cold. Roast was good but nothing special, you'd not have to put a lot of effort in thr replicate it at home. Staff really friendly and attentive
I love this place. Decent food, decent beers, friendly staff who care about what they’re doing. Always a good stop for a forest walk.
Suitable for families, friends for a catch-up, all sorts... Myself and a friend had the biggest sandwiches! Mine was smoked salmon and cream cheese in delicious wholemeal bread. Very generous serving of salmon. It also came with fries. With the best homemade mac 'n' cheese to share, it was all really good and filling. Definitely recommend. Bar ladies were great, too. Looking for an excuse to go there again very soon!
Disappointing to say the least. Sunday lunch recently. We were a party of 11 booked in at 12.30. We started with a choice of 4 meats lamb, pork, beef or chicken. Turns out they only had beef or pork left. Fine, not a problem. My mum and my brother ordered sea bass. They came back and said they only has one sea bass left. Fine. The food arrived. My stuffing was still frozen in the middle. They reheated, which was fine. The one sea bass was dry and my brother who had now ordered the beef burger with onion rings, both of which lacked taste, they needed basic seasoning. I tried his meal and completely agreed. The kids meals were messed up, hey ho. By now we just wanted to go. My father, however wanted his favourite dessert, ice cream. A choice of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. Wow! He ordered a scoop of strawberry and vanilla. They came back and said they only had strawberry. This is a frozen dessert for goodness sake. Supermarkets were still open at 12.30pm, they should have prepared and stocked up. We were early lunch guests ! I was grateful to be out and not cooking, however I would rather of paid to eat somewhere else. We won’t return, basics weren’t thought about and so I won’t be giving the Theydon Oak my hard earned cash. Wouldn’t recommend due to food or service. The bill was nearly £400, we all expected better. Sorry Theydon Oak, not a great review I’m afraid.
Can't praise the staff enough. We arrived 5 minutes before the end of service but made to feel very welcome even though it was very busy. Lovely ambience and fantastic food. Very reasonably priced too..
We visited on bank holiday weekend during the Sausage @ Cider festival. The day was certainly entertaining if a little manic at times. The food was good but the ciders were not for me, fortunately they have Moretti on tap so I was happy.
We used to go to this pub a lot pre pandemic. Always good, hearty food. I'm afraid it seems to have gone downhill lately. We don't recognise any of the staff. Yes, they've made a few aesthetic changes but the menu is much reduced and quality doesn't seem as good so we won't rush to return. Pastry on the steak n kidney pie was rock hard and instead of a nice flakey piece of cod, it was quite mushy.
