The Walled Nursery Cafe
"Water Lane is an idyllic walled garden with a vinery and a stunning collection of Victorian glasshouses on the Kent and Sussex borders. A long-term project over years to come, the site is being sympathetically transformed into a working kitchen garden with vegetable beds, cut flowers, restored vinery, outside spaces and a pavilion for dining and events."

I've been wanting to visit Water Lane for a long time now and thought I would visit for lunch today. At the bottom of the menu, they detailed what was being harvested from the garden today, what the weather was meant to be like and some gardening tips, which was a lovely touch. Very quaint and quiet little restaurant, set in one of the old glass houses. Fair selection on the lunch menu and what I had was very nice although pricey. Lovely little shop next door just before you get to the restaurant. You have to go to the back of the restaurant to enter. Vegetarian options: Good vegetarian options.
We were lucky enough to have our wedding reception here and it was amazing. We met Nick and the team beforehand, to plan. Nick is so very passionate about the venue. We explained what we wanted to achieve and Nick suggested how best to do it. The menu was absolutely fabulous, created from the produce available they've grown in the garden. We had an amazing afternoon and it was everything we wished for. Wouldn't hesitate to go there again, tea/coffee and cake, lunch or another celebration. Thank you.
I found dining at Water Lane a very unique experience. Me and my family enjoyed our delicious food in a very peaceful and friendly environment while admiring beautifully groomed vegetable and flower gardens. Ian and Nick took a great care of us and at the end gave us a nice tour around the property. I highly recommend this place to lovers of an exceptional food and a natural and friendly atmosphere.
Food was incredible, flavoursome and fresh. Beautiful place. Great service. Had such a wonderful day.
Excellent place for brunch... We had been planning on coming here for ages and regretted that it took us so long... Excellent food and lovely atmosphere... We will certainly be coming back again and sooner this time!!! Parking: Parking close by and plenty of it.
The staff where all lovely however I dont really get why we had to wait for so long for a piece of quiche. .there where 5 staff there with a very small number of customers. The setting in the tent was lovely....my only criticism would be the staff walking around on the gravel outside of the container....because of the tented structure the sound of them walking on the gravel is accentuated and was a bit annoying. Sorry to say that....no doubt as things develop this will be a thriving place to go
Today was my second visit in 3 weeks. I absolutely adore this restaurant. A high, curved tent-like structure keeps you cool despite the heat. The food is fresher than fresh infact the view from the terrace sweeps across the garden that many of the vegetables are harvested from. Every plate is presented in an appetising but unpretentious way. The service is attentive, kind and pleasant. It's a joy to come here: The smells, the taste and the atmosphere are sublime. Book before you go, even on a week day the terrace is pretty full, especially considering how tucked away this spot is. Highly recommended!!
Sadly, after travelling to our reservation for breakfast for 9.45am we were informed once we had found somebody that breakfast is not served until 10am. This made for a disappointing start as the booking procedure online is tedious and I was pestered by text messages reminding me of our breakfast booking at 9.45am. The signage is not good, there was no-one to greet us, anywhere we wandered into the disused old lean to greenhouse, previously inviting and now a tatty store area. When we found the Carnation House it was not set up and ready for guests. Sun blinds were altered & flowers placed on tables and so on around us, finishing by the time we were eating our final mouthfuls. A staff member was making calls arranging events and working on their laptop behind us which spoilt the peaceful ambience. Is there an office? There was not a local sausage in sight on the breakfast menu and the bacon sandwich could have been improved by a choice of bread or a simple garnish, especially as we were sitting in the middle of a lovely veg patch! We were the only guests there, and it's clearly still a work in progress. When you charge a service fee and ask people to book with credit card on file you raise expectations, and one expects to be greeted enthusiastically, a thank you and goodbye go along way, as does a bag hook on a cubicle door, a mirror in a powder room and an acknowledgement from a staff member in an empty shop. We do wish you well in the future and hope you will grow into this special place that so many people feel fondly about.
We adventured to Water Lane last Saturday. After reading a glowing Times review and careful investigation to make sure the site was accessible/disabled friendly we jumped in the car. We arrived at the beautiful setting with stunning glass houses and stretch tent dinning, only to find that the site was far from disabled friendly how devestating. The car park is uneven, the main area is covered in deep shingle, steps down to the dinning area without handrails. Which I believe to comply to current building regulations depending on the width of the stairs at least one hand rail is a legal requirement. A ramp is available however it is narrow covered in shingle and impossible for a wheel chair, again I believe the ramp should have also have a hand rail. The toilets are extremely challenging for anyone with limited mobility and impossible for wheelchair users. After a big effort to get to the tent our table was given it was at the rear of the tent, then kindly a table nearer to the entrance was offered ,Thank goodness!! We sat down to enjoy our lunch. We both started with the squid which looked stunning but was sadly extremely gritty, we followed with steak and the chicken pie. The steak and pie were both delicious but the celeriac/stilton gratin over cooked and burnt. We ended the meal with a cheese plate and Autumn mess. The crackers were forgotten and the Autumn mess in my opinion was inedible. We ask the chef to check the freshness of the Autumn mess as it smelt and tasted to me that it wasn’t safe to eat. The pudding was taken off for tasting and to my absolute horror the same pudding was returned to me to eat after being told the chef had tasted it and said it was all good. I wasn’t offered an alternative, I was told that it will be taken off the bill and didn’t have to be eaten. The site is truly beautiful a wonderful interactive experience. However its not suitable for disabled or people with limited mobility. I feel that this information should be made aware on your website and updated on google. At the moment it’s completely misleading and inappropriate extremely disappointing for those who aren't as able as others.
Fantastic undercover open air dining experience, using both ingredients sourced from within the walled garden surrounding the venue and also local suppliers. Attentive service greats you and a menu which appears to change on on daily basis to make the most of fresh seasonal ingredients.
