We had originally booked The Swan at Lavenham for an April 2020 family vacation. Covid had other plans and we had to wait 2.5 years to finally go. It was worth the wait. The Swan is a truly special place. The architecture is magnificent and just wandering the hotel is a real delight. But the people are what make it so nice. We so enjoyed feeling at home, being able to eat and drink in the comfort of the many living room style areas, as well as in the spectacular Gallery Restaurant of the medieval hall. The breakfast staff in the Gallery were particularly kind, warm and welcoming and helped make every day start off right. The food was fantastic. We loved breakfasts in the mornings, enjoyed high tea and are still talking about the Sunday Roast, as well as one evening where we had hankerings for burgers and enjoyed them on the comfortable couches. The Swan is perfectly located either for village strolls or countryside walks, and really enjoyed being able to just walk out and amble. The bedrooms were beautiful – each unique and distinctive – the beds were very comfortable, and the spa products were great. The Weaver House Spa was also a fantastic part of the experience, as we made frequent use of the vitality pool, the sauna and the steam room, even when we did not go for treatments. We really loved the Swan and hope to have a chance to return again – it is a perfect place for restorative relaxation in an unforgettable setting.
I was more than pleased with the room, food in the Gallery restaurant and the quality of the service. The room was quiet and comfortable apart from a little traffic noise in the morning, which was to be expected. The table display for breakfast and the choice of menu was exceptional and as good or better than the majority of Michelin restaurants we stay in quite regularly. The quality of cooking in the evening was equally as good and all in all it was a very enjoyable experience
Stopped for what was only supposed to be a coffee but after entering this wonderful building we decided to ask if there was a table free. Not really expecting there to be as it was Sunday lunch and we hadn't booked. Staff could not have been more helpful and got us in. So glad we did. Had an absolutely fabulous roast. Would and already have highly recommend to anyone.
Stayed here in October 2022. Got to admit we were really looking forward to my 50th birthday treat - especially as The Swan has a great reputation. Sadly not the case for us and we ended up feeling most disappointed with the room in particular. As soon as we opened our bathroom door the smell of mould was over powering. Come on guys this could easily be rectified by putting some Reed diffusers in. The bathroom was very out of date. The carpets had marks on. I felt really bad moaning to my husband as he paid out a lot of money for us to go here. The restaurant was half empty which surprised me - the menu was very very limited. We wanted to eat in the main restaurant but there was literally not one thing that I could choose from the menu so we downgraded to the brasserie. Still not a great choice. The good things about this hotel are the friendliness of the staff and also from the outside it’s a beautiful looking building. I would never return and I would never recommend to others. It seems that they are lucky to survive on reputation alone. Thankfully only there for one night otherwise I’d have worried about damage to our lungs from breathing in mould all night. The breakfast choice was another plus actually and could not be faulted. I originally rated 1 star but am upgrading to 2 - one star for the lovely staff and another for breakfast.
A three-day trip to The Swan was everything I needed - despite the continuous rain! The building itself is unique but the staff makes a visitor stay even better. They are unobtrusive but are always there with help, directions and advice. Despite being hidden away in the back of the hotel my room was very well appointed in a modest but luxurious fashion. I can strongly recommend the guinea fowl breast in The Gallery Restaurant. The Butcher's Breafast was very tasty but defeated my appetite. To sum The Swan up , I would say that it is a long time since I have stayed at such a friendly hotel. Thank you.
Came here for a mini moon and it was perfect. The Priory suite is great, dinner was lovely and the inclusive breakfast is one of the best in recent memory with a hot food menu and an extensive continental buffet. 60 minute free spa usage also highly appreciated. Highly recommended Food & drinks: The restaurant is high quality enough but also within super easy walking distance to a number of other high quality eateries
Myself and my partner came for lunch on 30/09/22 and we’re very unimpressed with the entire experience. We came in and wasn’t greeted on arrival or shown where to go for our table. The lady behind the bar was vacant. We had to ask to be shown to our table and we were just pointed in the general direction of the dining room rather than being walked to it. We eventually got to The Gallery and we’re sat all crammed onto one side of the room, so close to other tables we were practically rubbing shoulders and could hear every part of other tables conversations and so they would also of been able to hear us. We then tried to order, which took 3 attempts as the menu wasn’t clear and some items were only available for dinner and not lunch. The waitress said “oh I don’t know, the chef just has a new way of doing things for some reason”. Mains are upwards of £25-30 which is fine if the quality and service is there, but it wasn’t. The staff were scruffy and inattentive and seemed as if they really didn’t want to be there. Our food came and it was only ok, we’ve eaten in many restaurants around the world and know a good dish when we see one, sadly this wasn’t. If it has been £10 cheaper then it would’ve been fine, but if I’m paying what they’re asking, it needs to be fantastic. There was also an enormous cobweb in the ceiling rafters. Just small details that should’ve been noticed at this price point. I emailed to let the restaurant know all of this as I wouldn’t normally write a public review. I was told someone would get back to me, but over a week later, no one has bothered to get in contact. For a lunch costing over £100 for just two mains, one, starter and one dessert and a drink each, I would avoid and go back elsewhere, the cost and the service/food do not align. It seems the swan are resting on their reputation and not implementing any measures in order to keep it. Nice old building, but that’s it.
The room was stunning, general service was great and breakfast was fantastic. HOWEVER, the pre-fixe dinner menu was some of the most awful and plain food my partner and I have ever had. Not worth the money we spent. I also didn’t get a good night sleep but I am used to a memory foam mattress at home. I appreciate the parking spaces and the local area is very quaint but I would not suggest the restaurant to anyone.
My wife and I visited the Swan at Lavenham in early April 2023. Everything surpassed our expectations, especially service. Please remember to honor this great service when you have a chance. If you want a romantic weekend or just to spend some quality time, visit the Swan at Lavenham. Please include breakfast in your reservation. It is also great. If you have a little more time, spend some time in the Gallery restaurant and their spa. You won't regret it. Rooms: Fantastic room, at least 500 years old. Nothing is straight but still standing. Food & drinks: The Gallery restaurant and the service in the restaurant are fit for kings/queens. Noteworthy details: Visit spa too.
Lovely old building, set in a picturesque village, with walls in the town and in the surrounding country. Our heritage room was very comfortable and well equipped. The hotel has a private car park just across the road about 2 minutes walk. There is free WiFi Two great restaurants, with a wide menu and breakfast options.
