Tried to charge me for treatments the NHS covers, and was the most rude person that ever wanted (not) to treat me. Wanted to charge me £80 for a scale and polish, when these are band 1 treatments through nhs (around £15) and refused to do a root canal in my wisdom tooth, wanted to extract. Diagnosis was not right as a simple x-ray (which was not taken) could've shed light in the matter.

After living away from the UK for a while (i.e. Spain, Australia, Singapore Sri Lanka etc) we returned to the UK and decided to live in Nottingham. My young adult son needed a dental check up and scale & polish, so we searched the Internet for local dentists. This one called a 'Family Dental Centre' seemed suitable at this point. I rang up to compare their prices to others I had found in my search, and they quoted £16.50 for a ''New Patient Check-up'' and either £18 or £35 or £80 (or more !) for a scale & polish depending on the work required and would not elaborate any more than this. I was getting frustrated from my search not knowing any of the reputation of any of the dentists I found in my search who were still taking patients. I asked the 'Sneinton Family Dental Centre (SFDC) to see my son any time in the coming 2 weeks before he left the country to work abroad long term. They claimed to be fully booked for that period but would see him a few hours later that very day (Oct 09). On arriving to this Sneinton Dentists, I was inclined to leave before even entering it. it was located in a re-fitted corner house/shop and was very small. On entering we could see that its seating capacity could hold no more than 6 people (8 maybe if everyone squeezed tight to each other). The reception desk was a very small ''enclosed'' cloak room sized area that had thick glass enclosing the receptionist. The reception room looked like it was made to protect staff from an invasion of thugs. A conversation with her had to be done with everyone else in the waiting roon listening, as it was impossible to do it discreetly through such a design. Not customer friendly at all. Then the confusion started. As we sat on the only available place to sit (a small 6 inch hardwood window ledge 18 inches from the floor that runs along the shops window) the receptionist appeared from a door next to her reception window (this entrance door has pin number security) that also leads to the treatment rooms. The receptionist gave my son a NHS form to fill in. On explaining that we were not using the NHS as we didn't qualify for it, she said he still had to complete and sign the form and would not allow a check up otherwise. Has the NHS dentist availability issue been resolved since we've been out of the country or something? After waiting just shy over 90 minutes in the dirtiest, most unpleasant waiting room for anywhere in my life (was also 5 mins early before appointment time), my son was called in. My son reappeared well within a minute, maybe just over half a minute. I thought he had been called in my mistake, or that he forgot to take something in with him. He said it was over. In disbelief, I tried to understand how any dentist can inspect 1 tooth in someones mouth in this time let alone the a whole check up. My son (who grew up with dental braces and very used to dental appointments) stated they just asked him to open his mouth, had a ''visual'' look inside his mouth without any proding about with any equipment, and never checked his gums or any other part of his mouth close up before telling him they we're running late and that there was no time to do his scale & polish. The reception woman may have gone home at some point whilst waiting as I didn't recognise the female sitting in reception now. She couldn't help over the issue of a quick inspection and we had to pay £15 for this check-up. What about the NHS claim form that was filled in ? After using many dentist's in many places (some of the poorest places) I had never experienced nor seen anything of this standard. They had the cheek to offer a scale & polish for the following week though, despite originally stateing that they were fully booked. An absolute disgrace.
